This will be our annual Christmas Cantata (which will be held at the traditional time of 4:15 PM&#8230; in our sanctuary). The Tapestry String Quartet along with our own Sue Crispin will play the accompaniment. Jack Rowland will pull everything together by directing the music.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16578 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Messiah12-_Sue-100_0026-400x300-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Messiah12-_Sue-100_0026-400x300-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Messiah12-_Sue-100_0026-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The &#8220;Christmas Part&#8221; of Handel&#8217;s famous oratorio is organized around a series of six Choruses (which are sung by the full choir). A set of solos introduce each chorus. In most cases, there are two solos; one is called a Recitative and the second is called an Air. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The Christmas section of the oratorio actually consists of six choruses, and the Hallelujah Chorus ends the Easter section. But- who could resist- we will end our Christmas cantata with the Hallelujah Chorus.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">In the weeks leading up to our December 17 Cantata, we will provide weekly &#8220;Countdown to The Messiah&#8221; articles highlighting one of the seven Choruses that comprise the cantata.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">This installment highlights the fourth chorus, &#8220;For Unto Us a Child is Born.&#8221;<br \/>\n <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-download'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Here&#8217;s a list of the 7 Choruses that are in &#8220;The Messiah.&#8221; Links to previously posted choruses are provided&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?p=16553\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\">And the Glory of the Lord<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-16635 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Cantata07-bw-_100_0028-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"159\" height=\"119\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Cantata07-bw-_100_0028-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Cantata07-bw-_100_0028.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 159px) 100vw, 159px\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?p=16581\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\">And He Shall Purify<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?p=16592\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">O Thou that Tellest Good Tidings<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">For Unto Us a Child is Born<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Glory to God<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #808080;\">His Yoke is Easy and His Burthen is Light<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Hallelujah Chorus<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Chorus 4 of 7: &#8220;For Unto Us a Child is Born&#8221;<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Context<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The Angels have appeared.\u00a0 They tell the shepherds that they&#8217;ve got some great news.\u00a0 And then they proclaim the good news that a Savior is being born to us.\u00a0 But before we can celebrate the good news about Jesus, we need to remember why He is coming.\u00a0 Sin has blackened the earth and separated us from God.\u00a0 The people are walking (and living) in darkness (and sin).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And so, when Jesus comes upon the earth, it&#8217;s like that dark morning when you squint after turning on the bedroom light.<\/p>\n<p>The two Bass solos that precede the chorus &#8220;For Unto Us a Child is Born&#8221; give us a picture of the great Light that has burst into our darkness:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Recitative<\/span><\/strong>:\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;<span style=\"color: #000080;\">For Behold, Darkness Shall Cover the Earth<\/span>&#8220;<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Air:<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 &#8220;<span style=\"color: #000080;\">The People that Walked in Darkness<\/span>&#8220;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>These lyrics are based on Isaiah 9:1-3.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s how King James puts it:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Nevertheless the dimness shall not be such as was in her vexation, when at the first he lightly afflicted the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, and afterward did more grievously afflict her by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, in Galilee of the nations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Thou hast multiplied the nation, and not increased the joy: they joy before thee according to the joy in harvest, and as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Aware of the Darkness, we can now look into the great Light.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Message<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Most of the words of these choruses are very familiar; they come right out of the Bible. But we&#8217;re used to the King James words, and sometimes the familiarity with the words blocks us from fully appreciating their meaning. And so, the below summary of our Weekly Chorus uses Eugene Peterson&#8217;s paraphrase, The Message.
