This will be our annual Christmas Cantata (which will be held at the traditional time of 4:15 PM&#8230; in our sanctuary). The Tapestry String Quartet along with our own Sue Crispin will play the accompaniment. A set of solos introduce each chorus. In most cases, there are two solos; one is called a Recitative and the second is called an Air. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The Christmas section of the oratorio actually consists of six choruses, and the Hallelujah Chorus ends the Easter section. But- who could resist- we will end our cantata with the Hallelujah Chorus.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">In the weeks leading up to our December 17 Cantata, we will provide weekly &#8220;Countdown to The Messiah&#8221; articles highlighting one of the seven Choruses that comprise the cantata.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">This installment highlights the second chorus.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> For a review of the previous chorus, click this button:<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0\u00a0 <a href='https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?p=16553' class='icon-button paper-icon' target=\"_blank\">Previous<span class='et-icon'><\/span><\/a> \u00a0<\/span><\/span><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><br \/>\n <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Chorus 2 of 7: &#8220;And He Shall Purify&#8221;<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Context<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>After the initial chorus (&#8220;And the Glory of the Lord&#8221;), two bass solos remind us that God is holy and that His coming doesn&#8217;t only provide comfort; it demands us to change.\u00a0 God&#8217;s holiness demands obedience and like a refiner&#8217;s fire, He will burn away all traces of sin and disobedience.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Recitative: \u00a0 &#8220;Thus Saith the Lord&#8221;\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Air:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;But who may abide the Day of His Coming?&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The lyrics of the solos come from the following passages (King James Version):\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <br \/>\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Haggai+2%3A6-7+&amp;version=KJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Haggai 2:6-7\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Malachi+3%3A1-3&amp;version=KJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Malachi 3:1-3<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The solos proclaim God&#8217;s holiness and judgement, and then the choir responds that God will purify &#8220;the sons of Levi&#8221; (the Hebrew priests)-\u00a0 and all of humanity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-warning'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=nehemiah+5&amp;version=NLT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nehemiah\u00a0chapter 5<\/a><\/span>, the Jewish nobles and officials were charging their poorer countrymen high interest rates, forcing them to sell their children into slavery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nehemiah reacted by shaking the fold of his robe and saying, &#8220;In this way may God shake out of his house and possessions every man who does not keep this promise (of returning the interest and redeeming their children).&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What needs to be &#8220;shaken&#8221; out of our lives?<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Message<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Most of the words of these choruses are very familiar; they come right out of the Bible. But we&#8217;re used to the King James words, and sometimes the familiarity with the words blocks us from fully appreciating their meaning. And so, the below summary of our Weekly Chorus uses Eugene Peterson&#8217;s paraphrase, The Message.
