{"id":1606,"date":"2014-04-21T15:19:24","date_gmt":"2014-04-21T19:19:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?p=1606"},"modified":"2015-07-25T15:42:11","modified_gmt":"2015-07-25T19:42:11","slug":"pumc-gives-wings-for-redbird-42014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?p=1606","title":{"rendered":"PUMC Gives Wings for Redbird (4\/20\/14)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Somebody Needs to Help These Poor People!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Wings4RedBird_2012.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-1612\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Wings4RedBird_2012-212x300.jpg\" alt=\"Wings4RedBird_2012\" width=\"150\" height=\"211\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Wings4RedBird_2012-212x300.jpg 212w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Wings4RedBird_2012.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>Years ago, PUMC member Don Beckett and his wife were driving through the hill country of Appalachia.\u00a0 Surrounded by poverty, Mrs. Becket said &#8220;somebody needs to help these poor people!&#8221;\u00a0 Years later, Don had lost his wife, but he never lost his wife&#8217;s plea on behalf of the poor children in Eastern Kentucky.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In 2013 a team from our church journeyed to Red Bird Mission, which is in the center of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #000080;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kyumc-www.brtsite.com\/redbirdmissionaryconference\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\">Redbird Mission Conference<\/span><\/a><\/span> of the United Methodist Church.\u00a0 The Redbird Conference is one of three &#8220;missionary conferences&#8221; within the United States (a &#8220;conference&#8221; is a regional collection of United Methodist churches&#8230; PUMC is in the &#8220;Greater New Jersey Annual Conference&#8221;).\u00a0 A missionary conference is an area whose financial resources can&#8217;t meet their needs; support from the entire United Methodist Church is needed.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The team spent a week using their carpentry and painting skills to participate in the repair of a home.\u00a0 They did what they could, but it was soon time to return home and hand the touch to the next volunteer team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But the cry of the needy children in Appalachia never left our church&#8217;s ears.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One month ago,\u00a0 as part of our Lenten series of the &#8220;Five Practices of Fruitful Living,&#8221; we learned to be intentional about our Spiritual Growth.\u00a0 The series identified one of the practices as &#8220;Risk Taking Mission&#8221;- trusting in God&#8217;s provision and grace and reaching out to share in the burdens that burdens the heart of Christ.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Instead of a simple sermon series, for one month we put Risk Taking Mission into practice.\u00a0 We set a goal of raising $1000 for the Red Bird Mission during the 40 days of Lent.\u00a0 However, we were drawn by God&#8217;s call for Risk Taking mission; it was clear that we had lowered the bar into our comfort zone.\u00a0 What if we determined to raise $2500 instead?\u00a0 Could God be trusted to enable children to place money into a birdhouse?\u00a0 Could God be trusted to work through the parents to enable them to give far beyond anyone&#8217;s expectations?\u00a0 (<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em>Pastor Larry has led us in this direction before!\u00a0 Remember our pledge for &#8220;Wings of the Morning?&#8221;<\/em><\/span>\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #000080;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?p=679\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\">Click Here<\/span><\/a><\/span>.)<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The Answer is YES!!!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On Easter Sunday we learned that the God who gives eternal life can indeed be trusted to multiply the little we have.\u00a0 The God who empowered Gideon&#8217;s 300 men to defeat an army of Midianites so large that they couldn&#8217;t be counted (see\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #000080;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=judges+7&amp;version=NLT\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\">Judges chapter 7<\/span><\/a><\/span>). \u00a0 The Bible describes the enemy army\u00a0 as &#8220;thick as locusts&#8221;).\u00a0 Not only did we meet our ambitious goal of $2500, God allowed us to exceed it.\u00a0 Far beyond our human comprehension and abilities, God used us to raise $3,642!\u00a0 God&#8217;s grace abounds.\u00a0 This amount was added to the $600 already budgeted from our Missions fund, and an initial goal of $1000 was transformed into a final value of $4242!\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This money will be going to a community desperate for help.\u00a0 It will feed, clothe, and shelter people.\u00a0 It will provide health care.\u00a0 It will enable the 23 churches in the Redbird Conference to not only care for its people, but to demonstrate the glory and power of God&#8217;s love.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;Somebody needs to help these poor people!&#8221;\u00a0 It&#8217;s not Gideon,\u00a0 it&#8217;s not us, it&#8217;s not even a colored-in Cardinal or a\u00a0 birdhouse.\u00a0 God working through people yielded to Him and trusting in His power and not in their own resources, can do more than we could ever imagine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If we think we&#8217;re doing something big, God&#8217;s got an idea that&#8217;s so much bigger.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>To learn more about our support of the Red Bird Mission, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a title=\"Red Bird Mission\" href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?page_id=541\">Click Here<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0+\u00a0 +\u00a0 +\u00a0 +\u00a0 +\u00a0 +\u00a0 +\u00a0 +\u00a0 +<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Why Are We Doing This???<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Below is a video depicting the desperate situation and poverty of the children in Appalachia.\u00a0 This video is one of a several series of videos on You Tube.\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/results?search_query=hidden+america-children+of+the+mountain\" target=\"_blank\">Click Here<\/a><\/span> to see more&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?feature=player_detailpage&#038;v=ocqTQBk_aco<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Somebody Needs to Help These Poor People!
