(4\/9\/17)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_14637\" style=\"width: 227px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Palm17-Cantata-cover-picture-_IMG_4186.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14637\" class=\"wp-image-14637\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Palm17-Cantata-cover-picture-_IMG_4186-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"217\" height=\"163\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Palm17-Cantata-cover-picture-_IMG_4186-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Palm17-Cantata-cover-picture-_IMG_4186.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 217px) 100vw, 217px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14637\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Journey to Hope (from cantata book cover)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Both services on Palm Sunday will be led by our choirs, and their message will begin with the announcement that\u00a0 &#8220;God is gonna trouble the Water.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The services will feature a cantata called &#8220;<strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">A Journey to Hope<\/span><\/strong>.&#8221;\u00a0 So how can &#8220;trouble the water&#8221;\u00a0 be a picture of hope???<\/p>\n<p>The Bible relates several accounts of where water was &#8220;troubled&#8221; to give hope and healing to those who had faith.\u00a0 Water can be many things.\u00a0 Water can represent nourishment, or refreshment, or cleansing. Sometimes it represents barriers and obstacles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The gospel of John (5:1-8) records an incident where disabled people lay around a pool waiting for the waters to be stirred (or &#8220;troubled&#8221;).\u00a0 The first one in was healed.\u00a0 In this account, there was one paralyzed man who would never be the first one in.\u00a0 But Jesus came to him and shook things up&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #003300;\">Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for a feast of the Jews.\u00a0 Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades.\u00a0 Here a great number of disabled people used to lie \u2014 the blind, the lame, the paralyzed.\u00a0 One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years.\u00a0 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Do you want to get well?<\/span>&#8220;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #003300;\">7 &#8220;Sir,&#8221; the invalid replied, &#8220;I have no one to help me into the pool when the <span style=\"background-color: #ffff99;\">water is stirred<\/span>. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #003300;\">8 Then Jesus said to him, &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.<\/span>&#8221;\u00a0 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Through many uses of water, God has promised hope.\u00a0 By surrounding us with water,\u00a0 by sprinkling us with water,\u00a0 by parting the water to grant us passage, God intervenes in\u00a0 our lives.\u00a0 Here are a few examples from the Bible&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<div class='tabs-left et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_5000 et_slidertype_left_tabs clearfix'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et_left_tabs_bg'><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<ul class='et-tabs-control'>\n\t\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tThe Red Sea\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tThe Jordan River\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tBaptism\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tWater to Wine\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tThe Sea of Galliee\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\u00a0 \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tThe UpperRoom\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul> <!-- .et-tabs-control --> \n\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-main-wrap'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Ex 14:21-22 21<\/span><\/strong> Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. The waters were divided, and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left.\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Josh 3:11-13, 15, 17<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 See, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth will go into the Jordan ahead of you.\u00a0 Now then, choose twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one from each tribe.\u00a0 And as soon as the priests who carry the ark of the Lord-the Lord of all the earth \u2014 set foot in the Jordan, its waters flowing downstream will be cut off and stand up in a heap.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>15 Now the Jordan is at flood stage all during harvest. Yet as soon as the priests who carried the ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the water&#8217;s edge,\u00a0 the water from upstream stopped flowing. It piled up in a heap a great distance away, &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>17 The priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood firm on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan, while all Israel passed by until the whole nation had completed the crossing on dry ground.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">The lyrics from the cantata command us to take the same faith that these priests had and to &#8220;<strong>wade in the water&#8230;<\/strong>&#8220;<\/span><\/em>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Matt 3:13-17<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John.\u00a0 But John tried to deter him, saying, &#8220;I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?&#8221;\u00a0 Jesus replied, &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.<\/span>&#8221; Then John consented.<\/p>\n<p>16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him.\u00a0 And a voice from heaven said, &#8220;This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.&#8221;\u00a0\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">John 2:6-10<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.\u00a0 Jesus said to the servants, &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Fill the jars with water<\/span>&#8220;; so they filled them to the brim.<\/p>\n<p>8 Then he told them, &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.<\/span>&#8221; They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, &#8220;Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.&#8221;\u00a0\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Mark 4:35-40<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Let us go over to the other side.<\/span>&#8221; Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him.<\/p>\n<p>37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped.\u00a0 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, &#8220;Teacher, don&#8217;t you care if we drown?&#8221;\u00a0 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Quiet! Be still!<\/span>&#8221; Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?<\/span>&#8221;\u00a0\n\t\t<\/div>\n<p>\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">John 13:3-5, 16<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God;\u00a0 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist.\u00a0 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples&#8217; feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.<\/p>\n<p>15 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you<\/span>.\u00a0\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .tabs-left -->\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Journey of Faith<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In each of the above examples, God is challenging us to walk out in faith&#8230;\u00a0 to &#8220;wade in the water.&#8221;\u00a0 He&#8217;s calling us to trust Him and to take our faith into love and service.<\/p>\n<p>Like the paralyzed man at the Bethesda pool, we don&#8217;t have to wait around waiting for something to happen.\u00a0 God has already &#8220;troubled the waters&#8221; and set us on a journey of experiencing His love and purpose in our lives.\u00a0 He invites us to walk in faith.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s how the lyrics in the cantata put it:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Come ye weary heavy burden, lost and ruined by the fall.\u00a0 <br \/>\n If you tarry till you&#8217;re better, you will never come at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>During this season of Lent,\u00a0 we have been on a Journey.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve taken a fresh look at the Cross and at our lives.\u00a0 Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy week, and the lyrics of our music will take us through that week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Journey to Jerusalem:<br \/>\n \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">There is a balm to heal the sin sick soul.<\/span><\/em>&#8220;<\/li>\n<li>Palm Sunday:\u00a0 <br \/>\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Ride on King Jesus!<\/span><\/em>&#8220;<\/li>\n<li>The Upper Room: <br \/>\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I&#8217;m gonna sit at the Welcome Table.<\/span><\/em>&#8220;<\/li>\n<li>Gethesemane:\u00a0 <br \/>\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Rising now the hour has come&#8230; Father let Thy will be done.<\/span><\/em>&#8220;<\/li>\n<li>Calvary:\u00a0 <br \/>\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">He bowed His head and died&#8230;\u00a0 not a word.<\/span><\/em>&#8220;<\/li>\n<li>The Tomb:\u00a0<br \/>\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">My Lord, what a morning! &#8230; Jesus has risen as He said.<\/span><\/em>&#8220;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Holy week ends with the joy of the resurrection (&#8220;<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Great day, Great day!<\/span><\/em>&#8220;) but it offers us a <strong>Journey of Hope<\/strong> which calls us to keep wading into the water in our daily walk of faith.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #008000; font-size: 12pt;\">=\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 =\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 =\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 =\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 =\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 =\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 =\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 =\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 =<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The Music&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">This challenge to &#8220;wade into the water&#8221; and to continue on our journey of hope and faith is presented in music.\u00a0 Our choir director,\u00a0 Sue Crispin, wrote the following introduction&#8230;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u201cA Journey to Hope\u201d<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Traditionally, our choirs have presented two special musical cantatas throughout the year.\u00a0 Our annual Christmas Candlelight Cantata is held <a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/SuperSunday-2016-02-07-Sue-C-_IMG_3041.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-10487 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/SuperSunday-2016-02-07-Sue-C-_IMG_3041-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"151\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/SuperSunday-2016-02-07-Sue-C-_IMG_3041-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/SuperSunday-2016-02-07-Sue-C-_IMG_3041.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/><\/a>the Sunday before Christmas, and has been presented for approximately 90 years.\u00a0 Over the years, during the Lenten and Easter seasons, our choirs have presented cantatas on an Easter theme.\u00a0 The music of both times of the year has been presented through traditional music, and also contemporary music.\u00a0 This Palm Sunday morning, April 9, at both services, our choirs will again present a message in music.\u00a0 This year\u2019s cantata, \u201cA Journey to Hope\u201d by Joseph Martin, is based on traditional Spirituals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The African American spiritual is really one of the true folk song styles of our country.\u00a0 Spirituals were sung as lullabies, play songs, and even work songs.\u00a0 As slaves were converted to Christianity, often attending Baptist or Methodist Churches, their themes became \u201cSpiritual.\u201d\u00a0 Some of the songs were even used as codes to help slaves escape north to freedom.\u00a0 The Jordan River, for example could represent the Mississippi River, where slaves would \u201ccross over\u201d into the promised land of freedom, just like the Israelites did.\u00a0 The spiritual style is the root of our Gospel and contemporary Christian music of today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We pray that as this music and scripture is presented, your Lenten journey will take on a deeper meaning, as we walk that \u201cLonesome Valley\u201d with Jesus, and celebrate that \u201cGreat Day\u201d as Jesus is risen from the dead!<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #003300;\">+\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 +\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 +\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 +\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 +\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 +\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 +\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 +\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 +\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 +<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To learn more about our musical ministry, you can click this button:\u00a0 <a href='https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?page_id=166' class='big-button bigpurple'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Musical Ministry<\/span><\/a> \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Both services on Palm Sunday will be led by our choirs, and their message will begin with the announcement that\u00a0 &#8220;God is gonna trouble the Water.&#8221;\u00a0 The services will feature a cantata called &#8220;A Journey to Hope.&#8221;\u00a0 So how can &#8220;trouble the water&#8221;\u00a0 be a picture of hope???
