{"id":1393,"date":"2014-04-06T21:40:36","date_gmt":"2014-04-07T01:40:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?p=1393"},"modified":"2014-05-08T16:14:54","modified_gmt":"2014-05-08T20:14:54","slug":"fruitful-living-5-of-5-extravagant-generosity-4614","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?p=1393","title":{"rendered":"Fruitful Living (5 of 5):  Extravagant Generosity (4\/6\/14)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The sermon on Sunday April 6 introduced practice #5 of our five part series on the &#8220;Five Practices of Fruitful Living&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 During this season of Lent, we are following the companion devotional guide by Robert Schanase entitled <em>in \u201cForty Days of Fruitful Living.\u201d<\/em> The sermons introduce the week\u2019s topic, and we discuss and study these topics during our small group meetings that\u00a0 week.\u00a0 This week&#8217;s sermon is the final in the series.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><div class='et-box et-info'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'>The Five Practices of Fruitful Living <\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Radical Hospitality <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Passionate Worship <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Intentional Faith Development <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Risk Taking Mission and Service <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Extravagant Generosity <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">By intentionally making the effort and paying the attention required to follow each of these disciplines, we can grow closer to Christ.\u00a0 Ignoring practices like these, or just drifting along on auto pilot, will lead to a stagnant life with little\u00a0 growth.<\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Extravagant Generosity<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Pastor Larry preached the final part of this series on Sunday April 6.\u00a0 The text for his message was from <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #800080;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2+corinthians+8%3A1-15&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800080; text-decoration: underline;\">2 Corinthians 8:1-15<\/span><\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Extravagant Generosity isn&#8217;t simply about &#8220;giving more money.&#8221;\u00a0 Extravagance means that you have an attitude of giving that&#8217;s unexpectedly joyous.\u00a0 It flows from who our are.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not something\u00a0 that comes out of duty or habit or if simply &#8220;pitching in to do your part.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Martin Luther said that Christians\u00a0 need three conversions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Conversion of the Mind.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Conversion of the Heart.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Conversion of the Purse.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Converting the hold\u00a0 on our purse strings doesn&#8217;t happen until we allow the Spirit to convert our heart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Pastor Larry organized his sermon using the Achrostic HELP.\u00a0 Open each tab to learn more&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<div class='tabs-left et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_5000 et_slidertype_left_tabs clearfix'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et_left_tabs_bg'><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<ul class='et-tabs-control'>\n\t\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tH\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tE\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tL\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tP\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul> <!-- .et-tabs-control --> \n\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-main-wrap'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>HEED<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Head God&#8217;s command to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind (Luke 10:27).\u00a0 And pay heed His promise to provide your needs.\u00a0 Verses 14-15 of 2 Corinthians 8 refer to when God supplied the Israelites with manna\u00a0 during\u00a0 their wandering through the wilderness.\u00a0 Everyone was to gather only what then needed for the day, trusting that the manna would appear the next morning to fill the next day&#8217;s needs.<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong>EMPTY YOURSELF<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Empty Yourself of all things that keep you from knowing God.\u00a0 In Philippians 2, we see that Jesus emptied Himself of His divine privileges so He could take on our sin.\u00a0 In the same way, we must empty ourselves so we can be filled with the Holy Spirit.<\/span>\u00a0\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong>LIFT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lift burdens off of other people.\u00a0 Just as Jesus carried the cross to lift the burden of sin off of us, we too must act to relieve the suffering of others.\u00a0 The\u00a0 story is told\u00a0 of a third grade class in\u00a0 which one student was away sick with cancer.\u00a0 The teacher\u00a0 told\u00a0 the class that this boy would soon be returning to school but that he would look different.\u00a0 Because of the chemotherapy, he had\u00a0 lost his hair.\u00a0 The boy&#8217;s classmates responded by going to the barber and getting their\u00a0 heads shaved.\u00a0 They lifted the burden of embarrassment off of their classmate by taking on his suffering.<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>PAY<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Pay the Price.\u00a0 The world&#8217;s wisdom says that we should earn as much as we can.\u00a0 And then, if anything&#8217;s left over, we can give some away.\u00a0 We give out of our abundance.\u00a0 But God calls us to give to HAVE abundance!\u00a0 As we give from our hearts we gain a joy and sense of purpose of becoming part of something bigger than ourselves.<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .tabs-left -->\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u00a0<a title=\"Forty Days of Fruitful Living Sermons &amp;
