{"id":13768,"date":"2017-01-17T16:41:33","date_gmt":"2017-01-17T20:41:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?p=13768"},"modified":"2017-03-01T14:47:34","modified_gmt":"2017-03-01T18:47:34","slug":"doublin-down-with-job","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?p=13768","title":{"rendered":"Doublin&#8217; Down with Job!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #008000;\">When someone we love dies, do we really loose them???<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;re probably familiar with the story of Job; He&#8217;s a rich landowner who lived sometime around the time of Abram.\u00a0 There&#8217;s this strange conversation in heaven, and the next thing you know he&#8217;s lost all of his possessions and his children.\u00a0 But some of the fine print details that we tend to skip over in a passage like this need to be noticed.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what it says in Job 1:1-2&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #800080;\">There once was a man named Job who lived in the land of Uz. He was blameless\u2014a man of complete integrity. He feared God and stayed away from evil. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">He had seven sons and three daughters.\u00a0 He owned 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 teams of oxen, and 500 female donkeys, and he employed many servants. He was, in fact, the richest person in that entire area.<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n<p>OK.\u00a0 He was a rich guy who feared God.\u00a0 The details don&#8217;t matter.\u00a0 You&#8217;ve probably read those verses a million times and always skimmed over the numbers and sheep, camels, and female donkeys.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In quick succession the Sabeans attack, Fire comes down from heaven, the Caldeans attack, and then a mighty wind takes what&#8217;s left.\u00a0 In the space of several verses, Job goes from being one of the richest guys alive to one of the most despicable.\u00a0 He starts off with a lovely family of 7 sons and 3 daughters, and ends up a pauper sitting in the ashes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But fast forward 41 chapters.\u00a0 In Job 42:10 we learn&#8230;<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #800080;\">When Job prayed for his friends, the Lord restored his fortunes. In fact, the Lord gave him twice as much as before!<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Twice as much!\u00a0 Those details in the first chapter take on some meaning when you compare it to the end of the story (in 42:12)&#8230;<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #800080;\">So the Lord blessed Job in the second half of his life even more than in the beginning. For now he had 14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 teams of oxen, and 1,000 female donkeys.<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s tabulate it out&#8230;<\/p>\n<table style=\"height: 123px;\" width=\"528\">\n<tbody>\n<tr style=\"height: 24px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 169.2px; text-align: center; height: 24px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">STUFF<\/span><\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 169.2px; text-align: center; height: 24px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\"># BEFORE<\/span><\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 169.2px; text-align: center; height: 24px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\"># AFTER<\/span><\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 24px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 169.2px; height: 24px; text-align: center;\">Sheep<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 169.2px; text-align: center; height: 24px;\">7,000<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 169.2px; text-align: center; height: 24px;\">14,000<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 24px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 169.2px; height: 24px; text-align: center;\">Camels<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 169.2px; text-align: center; height: 24px;\">3,000<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 169.2px; text-align: center; height: 24px;\">6,000<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 24px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 169.2px; height: 24px; text-align: center;\">Teams of Oxen<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 169.2px; text-align: center; height: 24px;\">500<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 169.2px; text-align: center; height: 24px;\">1,000<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 24.2px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 169.2px; height: 24.2px; text-align: center;\">Female Donkeys<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 169.2px; text-align: center; height: 24.2px;\">500<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 169.2px; text-align: center; height: 24.2px;\">1,000<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Cool.\u00a0 A perfect double; as far as &#8220;stuff&#8221; goes, Job is twice as rich as he was before Satan did his little experiment.<\/p>\n<p>But there&#8217;s something strange here&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Job 1:2 says that Job started out with 7 sons and 3 daughters.\u00a0 But after the big doubling of blessings, 42:13 says&#8230;.<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #800080;\">He also gave Job seven more sons and three more daughters.\u00a0<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Wait a minute&#8230; something&#8217;s wrong with the math here.\u00a0 If the number of sheep, camels, oxen, and female donkeys doubled, shouldn&#8217;t the <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-13776\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Calculator-_168360_1280-400x300-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"189\" height=\"142\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Calculator-_168360_1280-400x300-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Calculator-_168360_1280-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 189px) 100vw, 189px\" \/>number of sons and daughters double?\u00a0 He ends up with 7 sons and 3 daughters; the same number of kids he had before disaster struck.\u00a0 The kids were just replaced, not doubled.\u00a0 Why doesn&#8217;t 42:13 say that Job was given 14 sons and 6 daughters?\u00a0 Why aren&#8217;t they doubled like everything else???<\/p>\n<p>Realizing that God&#8217;s math abilities beat any super computer, there&#8217;s only one explanation:\u00a0 The original 7 sons and 3 daughters are still alive!\u00a0 No, they&#8217;re not hiding out somewhere in the desert- they did die when that mighty wind blew in.\u00a0 But in God&#8217;s eyes, they still live.\u00a0 They are in heaven.\u00a0 God gave Job MORE sons and daughters!<\/p>\n<p>So it seems like one of those minor details.\u00a0 But we see over and over again, that God is in the details!\u00a0 If you take the long term view and try to see thing&#8217;s from God&#8217;s perspective of eternity, God really DID double the size of Job&#8217;s family!\u00a0 Some 140 years after the big wind storm, Job died &#8220;full of years&#8221; and reunited with his eldest 7 sons and 3 daughters.\u00a0 And some years after that, you can be sure that there was a big welcome dinner with all 14 sons and 6 daughters!<\/p>\n<p>Livestock and riches go away and are temporary.\u00a0 But God&#8217;s people live forever.\u00a0 In heaven or on earth, they all count in God&#8217;s eternal kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When someone we love dies, do we really loose them???
