(7\/31\/16- Camp Meeting)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">On August 24, 1972, Neil Diamond held a concert in Los Angeles&#8217; Greek Theater.\u00a0 The concert was recorded and was turned into a double album which became one of the best selling records of that time. The concert and album were aptly named &#8220;Hot August Night.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">July 31, 2016 was a hot and humid night.\u00a0 Pitman UMC was the host night for the summer Camp Meeting, and Pastor Jim Bolton was to give the sermon.\u00a0 Now, the crowd in the Pitman Camp Meeting on this night didn&#8217;t quite live up the the throng in the Greek Theater all those years ago, and the sermon won&#8217;t be turned into a double platinum album. \u00a0 But the people gathered in the Grove Auditorium were seeking to be blessed.\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12230 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/CampMtg-2016-07-31-Pastor-Jim-_IMG_0091-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"CampMtg 2016-07-31 Pastor Jim _IMG_0091\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/CampMtg-2016-07-31-Pastor-Jim-_IMG_0091-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/CampMtg-2016-07-31-Pastor-Jim-_IMG_0091.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">It was hot and humid; it would have been easy to skip this one and stay at home in the air conditioning. I will constantly speak his praises.<\/p>\n<p>2 I will boast only in the Lord; let all who are helpless take heart.<\/p>\n<p>3 Come, let us tell of the Lord&#8217;s greatness; let us exalt his name together.<\/p>\n<p>4 I prayed to the Lord, and he answered me. He freed me from all my fears.<\/p>\n<p>5 Those who look to him for help will be radiant with joy; no shadow of shame will darken their faces.<\/p>\n<p>6 In my desperation I prayed, and the Lord listened; he saved me from all my troubles.<\/p>\n<p>7 For the angel of the Lord is a guard; he surrounds and defends all who fear him.<\/p>\n<p>8 Taste and see that the Lord is good. Search for peace, and work to maintain it.<\/p>\n<p>15 The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do right; his ears are open to their cries for help.<\/p>\n<p>16 But the Lord turns his face against those who do evil; he will erase their memory from the earth.<\/p>\n<p>17 The Lord hears his people when they call to him for help. He rescues them from all their troubles.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Pastor Jim&#8217;s attire has caused some &#8220;humorous controversy&#8221; height: 117px;\" border=\"12\" width=\"615\">\n<tbody>\n<tr style=\"height: 24.75px;\">\n<td style=\"height: 24.75px; width: 583.333px; text-align: center; vertical-align: middle;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #008000;\"><em>\u00a0<strong>A cheerful disposition is good for your health; gloom and doom leave you bone-tired.<\/strong><\/em> <\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">&#8220;A Bit of Humor&#8221;&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">PUMC once had a pastor named Andy Braun who frequently interrupted his sermons with the line &#8220;and now for a bit of humor.&#8221;\u00a0 His ensuing joke would not only lighten the mode, but it would also help to illustrate his point.\u00a0 And so, let&#8217;s begin this message with &#8220;a little bit of humor&#8221;&#8230;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">April Fools Test&#8230;<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Have any of you heard of an \u201cApril Fool\u2019s Aptitude Test\u201d? They told Saint Peter they wanted to be married. &#8220;Take your time and think about it,&#8221; Saint Peter said. You have eternity to think about it here. Come back and talk to me in about 50 years. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Fifty years later, the couple returned and again told Saint Peter they wanted to be married. &#8220;Take your time and think about it some more about it,&#8221; Saint Peter said. &#8220;Come back and see me in another 50 years. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So another 50 years go by and the couple returns and tells St. Peter they still want to be married.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Saint Peter sighs and finally says, &#8220;Come back and see me in another 50 years. And if we don&#8217;t have a Methodist preacher up here by then, I&#8217;ll marry you myself.&#8221;<\/span><\/div><\/div><br \/>\nTo laugh or not to laugh, that is the question. It seems like we are living in a pressure-packed, tension-filled, hopeless world, doesn\u2019t it? Everybody is so serious about everything! There is tension in our country, in politics, in our cities, in our economy, in our denomination.<\/p>\n<p>Worship has always been in a state of tension between our understanding of piety and the joy that fills the heart by the Good News of the Gospel.<br \/>\nGod loves to laugh! Yes, there is suffering in the world, scandals, wars and heartache. God suffers with us when we suffer. God weeps with us, but God laughs with us too. The primary quality of God is joy. The King James Version of the Bible uses the word \u201cjoy\u201d 155 times.<br \/>\n1. God laughs. We read the same in Psalm 37:13 (\u201cThe Lord laughs at him, For He sees his day is coming\u201d \u2013 NASB) and Psalm 59:8 (\u201cBut You, O Lord, laugh at them; You scoff at all the nations\u201d \u2013 NASB).<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s an absurdity about trying to go against God.\u00a0 You can&#8217;t top God.\u00a0\u00a0 The ridiculousness about it is so intense that all you can do is laugh and say, &#8220;really???&#8221; \u00a0 Imagine trying to push a camel through the eye of a needle (Jesus intended this illustration to be humorous). \u00a0 God is in control, no matter what man can muster; these verses are encouraging and comforting. If laughter is good for God, then it has to be good for you and me. DON\u2019T MISUNDERSTAND ME, God doesn\u2019t laugh <em>at<\/em> us. God laughs <strong><em>with<\/em> <\/strong>us. I am so glad that it\u2019s not 50 years ago! If there is no laughter, then there is no joy, if there is no joy then there is no hope, if there is no hope there is no presence of the resurrected Christ, and if there is no resurrected Christ&#8230; what\u2019s the purpose of the Christian Church?<\/p>\n<p><div class='et-box et-download'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In one of my former churches there was an organist who sat at the bench while I preached. One particular Sunday as I launched into the sermon, the organist you could see was fading little by little you could see her eyes getting heavier and heavier. SOON she began to rock and then FINALLY, her head went down on the keys of the organ that let out a sound that only Bella Lagosie would have enjoyed! Nobody remembered a word of the sermon that day! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A couple of years ago I ran into a man from the church; and you know what he said, \u201c<em><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Remember that day when Edith fell asleep on the organ right in the middle of your sermon<\/span><\/em>&#8220;? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The sermon got completely upstaged by a sleeping organist!<\/span><\/div><\/div><br \/>\nThat moment, like so many unplanned things in worship, is a God-moment for laughter. FRIENDS, God is active and present in every moment of our lives. We make sure that we have our proper Sunday-go-to-meetin\u2019 face on. But very often when something funny happens, it is a God-moment to be enjoyed, not resisted.\u00a0 Just like an organist falling asleep on the keys.<\/p>\n<p>This is exactly what Paul means when he writes in Romans 12:15, that Christians express their authenticity by \u201c<em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">weeping with those who weep and rejoicing with those who rejoice.<\/span><\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eugene Peterson translates this verse in The Message, \u201c<em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Bless your enemies; no cursing under your breath. Laugh with your happy friends when they\u2019re happy; share tears when they\u2019re down<\/span><\/em>\u201d<br \/>\nEcclesiastes 3:4a tells us there is \u201c<em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">a time to laugh<\/span><\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laughter comes out of the darkness of our humdrum, drab, pain-filled lives. Laughter comes as a sudden jab of light in the middle of dark. Laughter doesn\u2019t eliminate the darkness, but it seems to make it bearable.\u00a0 As John Wesley would agree, laughter is God\u2019s grace, handed to us like a piece of bread or a cup of water when we\u2019re hungry and thirsty. There were bags of seeds variously marked &#8220;Hatred,&#8221; &#8220;Fear,&#8221; &#8220;Doubt,&#8221; Despair,&#8221; &#8220;Unforgiveness,&#8221; &#8220;Pride,&#8221; &#8220;Greed,&#8221; etc. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The devil appeared and struck up a conversation with the traveler. He gleefully told the traveler how easily the seeds he sowed sprouted in the hearts of men and women. &#8220;Are there any hearts in which these seeds will not sprout?&#8221; the traveler asked. A melancholy look appeared on the devil&#8217;s face. &#8220;These seeds will not sprout in the heart of a thankful and joyful person,&#8221; he confessed.\u00a0<\/div><\/div><br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> I often begin a sermon with humor and include humor in the sermon. In fact, I try to use humor in nearly every situation when I can. I do this for a very good reason, or at least, I hope it is a good reason. It is good for me to stay focused, in the moment so-to-speak, but also to stay loose. In fact, the early ancient Christian theologians called worship, \u201c<em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Risus paschalis<\/span><\/em>,\u201d which literally means, \u201cthe Easter laugh.&#8221; They gave it that Latin name because they understood that the resurrection was our assurance of victory and God\u2019s way of laughing at Satan, sin, and death.<\/p>\n<p>There was a custom in the ancient Church that Easter Monday and the the Sunday after Easter was called \u201c<strong>Bright Sunday<\/strong>.\u201d It has its origins in Early Church Fathers such as Augustine, Gregory of Nyssa, and John Chrysostom. They believed that God played a practical joke on the devil by raising Jesus from the dead.<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-info'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">According to the General Board of Discipleship of the United Methodist Church&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> \u201cMany American churches are resurrecting an old Easter custom begun by the early Greek Christians &#8212; \u2018Bright Sunday\u2019 or \u2018Holy Humor Sunday\u2019 celebrations on the Sunday after Easter. Isn&#8217;t it something that turns the tables on the expected, something that hinges on the unpredictable or unreasonable? There&#8217;s nothing more unreasonable than the resurrection of Jesus. And to believe in it is to be part of that huge practical joke that God plays on those who trust blindly in the sufficiency of human reason to unravel all problems and to answer every question.<\/span>&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He continues: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;<span style=\"color: #993366;\">Easter is the morning when the Lord laughs out loud, laughs at all the things that snuff out joy, all the things that pretend to be all-powerful, like cruelty and madness and despair and evil, and most especially, that great pretender, death. Jesus sweeps them away with His wonderful resurrection laughter.<\/span>&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<p>You want to laugh, you want to see the lighter side of this life, then we must internalize, and practice the same faith, courage, and laughter that is expressed in the Psalms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Psalm 34:4a, \u201cI sought the Lord.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Psalm 34:8a, \u201cO taste and see that the Lord is good.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Psalm 34:2-3, \u201cMy soul makes its boast in the LORD; let the humble hear and be glad. Chesterton went on to make a wonderful pun of his own:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #993366;\">\u201cSatan fell by the force of his own gravity.\u201d<\/span> <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The devil took himself too seriously, too gravely. God does not want us to do that.<br \/>\nWith the resurrection of Jesus, God raises us out of heaviness into lightness when we quit taking ourselves seriously. Jesus is the light of the world (John 1:9; John 8:12) and He makes the world lighter on our shoulders (Matthew 11:28-30). He gives us the easy yoke, the light burden. He is bringing an end to gravity and the grave. He invites us to soar with the angels on the wings (Isaiah 40:31) of holy laughter. So today and always, as God gives you grace, lighten up. He\u2019s up! I love the Russian Orthodox tradition that the priests gather after Easter Sunday worship to tell jokes to each other. That\u2019s the true spirit of the humor of Jesus. It\u2019s a comedy based in real happiness because in all that really matters we are victorious. Christ is risen and so are we.<\/p>\n<p>I also like Garrison Keillor\u2019s story of the young substitute priest who showed up for the Lake Wobegon Easter sunrise service wearing a T-shirt showing Jesus on water skis. It read \u201cHe\u2019s up!\u201d That\u2019s the spirit of Easter, that\u2019s our living Lord. Joyous humor about the greatest event ever to happen. His risen life is the best reason we all have to laugh.<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Lighten Up!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If you would be patient for just a moment longer, I would like to close with a letter which was written many years ago&#8230;<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-download'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A &#8220;snowbird&#8221; from the north wanted a week&#8217;s vacation at a Florida campground, but was concerned about the accommodations. Uppermost in her mind were the toilet facilities; but she was too proper to write &#8220;toilet,&#8221; so she abbreviated &#8220;bathroom commode&#8221; to &#8220;BC&#8221; and asked in her letter if the campground had its own &#8220;BC.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The campground owner was baffled by this euphemism; so he showed it around, but nobody knew what it meant. Finally, someone said, &#8220;Oh, that&#8217;s simple. &#8216;BC&#8217; means Baptist Church. She&#8217;s asking whether the campground has its own Baptist Church.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So the owner sat down and wrote: <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Dear Madam, <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #000080;\">I&#8217;m sorry about the delay in answering your letter, but I&#8217;m pleased to inform you that a BC is located just nine miles north of the campground and is capable of seating 250 people at one time. I admit it is quite a distance away if you are in the habit of going regularly, but no doubt you will be pleased to know that a great number of people take their lunches along and make a day of it. They usually arrive early and stay late. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The last time my wife and I went was six years ago, and it was so crowded we had to stand up the whole time we were there. It may interest you to know that there is a supper planned to raise money to buy more seats. They&#8217;re going to hold it in the basement of the BC. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #000080;\">I would like to say that it pains me greatly not to be able to go more regularly, but it is really not lack of desire of my part. As we grow older, it seems to be more of an effort, especially in cold weather. If you decide to come to our campground, perhaps I could go with you the first time, sit with you and introduce you to all the folks.
