or when &#8220;He&#8221; is referred to using masculine terms, we immediately think that somehow we&#8217;re tying &#8220;Him&#8221; to a human gender.\u00a0 But that&#8217;s not the case.\u00a0 Calling God &#8220;Father&#8221; pictures a relationship; not a human gender.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">God isn&#8217;t Human&#8230;<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The Bible (John 4:24) says that God is NOT a man; He&#8217;s a Spirit&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8220;For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.&#8221;<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The Old Testament reminds us that God is not a man&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-container et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_5000 et_slidertype_top_tabs'>\n\t\t\t\t<ul class='et-tabs-control'>\n\t\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tNumbers 23:19\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tHosea 11:9\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul> <!-- .et-tabs-control --> \n\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-main-wrap'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Numbers 23:19<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>God is not a man, so he does not lie.<\/p>\n<p>He is not human, so he does not change his mind.<\/p>\n<p>Has he ever spoken and failed to act?<\/p>\n<p>Has he ever promised and not carried it through? NLT\u00a0\n\t\t<\/div>\n<p>\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Hosea 11:9<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No, I will not unleash my fierce anger.<\/p>\n<p>I will not completely destroy Israel,<\/p>\n<p>for I am God and not a mere mortal.<\/p>\n<p>I am the Holy One living among you,<\/p>\n<p>and I will not come to destroy.\u00a0 NLT\u00a0\n\t\t<\/div> \u00a0\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .et-tabs-container -->\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">God isn&#8217;t Male or Female&#8230;<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>God transcends gender, God is not one gender as opposed to another. So guard your heart; remain loyal to the wife of your youth.\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .et-tabs-container -->\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">God IS a Loving Parent&#8230;<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>When God is referred as a father, this is simply the use of a metaphor in which He is likened to a kind and loving father. \u00a0 TO BE SURE, God&#8217;s love and care can be compared to that of a concerned and caring mother as we read in&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-container et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_5000 et_slidertype_top_tabs'>\n\t\t\t\t<ul class='et-tabs-control'>\n\t\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tIsaiah 49:14-16\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\u00a0 \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tLuke 13:34\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\u00a0\n\t\t<\/ul> <!-- .et-tabs-control --> \n\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-main-wrap'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tYet Jerusalem says, &#8220;The Lord has deserted us;\nthe Lord has forgotten us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Never! Can a mother forget her nursing child? Can she feel no love for the child she has borne?\nBut even if that were possible, I would not forget you!<\/p>\n<p>See, I have written your name on the palms of my hands.\u00a0 Always in my mind is a picture of Jerusalem&#8217;s walls in ruins.\u00a0\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t&#8220;O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones God&#8217;s messengers! How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn&#8217;t let me.\u00a0\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .et-tabs-container -->\n<p>God is neither male nor female.\u00a0 The image as Father (or even as Mother or Hen) tells us that God is a loving parent who wants us to love Him and to &#8220;crawl into His lap&#8221; when we run into trouble.<\/p>\n<p>To avoid the metaphor of father as a description and designation for God is to lose sight of the fact that Jesus chose this as his metaphor to address God and that he taught this as the metaphor by which his disciples should address God.<\/p>\n<p>It also loses sight of the continuity established by the use of this metaphor with those who have called God &#8220;Father&#8221; over the centuries. These include:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-container et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_5000 et_slidertype_top_tabs'>\n\t\t\t\t<ul class='et-tabs-control'>\n\t\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tDisciples\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tCongregations\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tCreeds\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tToday\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul> <!-- .et-tabs-control --> \n\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-main-wrap'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Matthew 6:8-9<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 Don&#8217;t be like them, for your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him!\u00a0 Pray like this:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;Our Father in heaven,\u00a0\u00a0 may your name be kept holy.&#8221;\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tThe earliest church congregations &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Romans 8:15<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God&#8217;s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, &#8220;Abba, Father.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Galatians 4:6\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 And because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, &#8220;Abba, Father.&#8221;\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">The Apostle&#8217;s Creed<\/span><\/strong> \u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;I Believe in God the FATHER Almighty&#8230;&#8221;\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tChristians all over the globe still pray Jesus&#8217; model prayer which begins with: &#8220;Our FATHER, who art in heaven&#8230;&#8221;\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .et-tabs-container -->\n<p>When God is referred as a father, this is simply the use of a metaphor in which He is likened to a kind and loving father.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The Father in the Old Testament<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>When Jesus referred to God as &#8220;Father,&#8221; He was building on something the Israelites already were familiar with.\u00a0 The language of God as a &#8220;Father&#8221; isn&#8217;t something that was created in the first century.\u00a0 The use of &#8220;Father&#8221; occurs more frequently in the New Testament than in the Old, but we do see references to it in the Old Testament.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, &#8220;Father&#8221; is used in terms of God being the &#8220;Father of the nation Israel&#8221;&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-container et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_5000 et_slidertype_top_tabs'>\n\t\t\t\t<ul class='et-tabs-control'>\n\t\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tDeut 32\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tIsa 63\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tIsa 64\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tJeremiah 3\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tJeremiah 31\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tMalachi\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul> <!-- .et-tabs-control --> \n\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-main-wrap'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Deuteronomy 32:6<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Is this the way you repay the Lord,\nyou foolish and senseless people?\u00a0 Isn&#8217;t he your Father who created you?\nHas he not made you and established you?\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Isaiah 63:16<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 Surely you are still our Father!\nEven if Abraham and Jacob would disown us,\nLord, you would still be our Father.\nYou are our Redeemer from ages past.\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Isaiah 64:8<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 And yet, O Lord, you are our Father.\nWe are the clay, and you are the potter. We all are formed by your hand.\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Jeremiah 3:4<\/span><\/strong> Yet you say to me,\u00a0 &#8216;Father, you have been my guide since my youth.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Jeremiah 3:19<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;I thought to myself, &#8216;I would love to treat you as my own children!&#8217; I wanted nothing more than to give you this beautiful land\u2014 the finest possession in the world. I looked forward to your calling me &#8216;Father,&#8217; and I wanted you never to turn from me.\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Jeremiah 31:9<\/span><\/strong> \u00a0 Tears of joy will stream down their faces, and I will lead them home with great care. They will walk beside quiet streams and on smooth paths where they will not stumble.\nFor I am Israel&#8217;s father, and Ephraim is my oldest child.\u00a0\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Malachi 1:6a<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 The Lord of Heaven&#8217;s Armies says to the priests: &#8220;A son honors his father, and a servant respects his master. If I am your father and master, where are the honor and respect I deserve?<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Malachi 2:10<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Are we not all children of the same Father? Are we not all created by the same God? That&#8217;s why I long for him and surely will have mercy on him.\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Hosea 11:1-4\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;When <span style=\"background-color: #00ff00;\">Israel was a child, I loved him,\u00a0 and I called my son out of Egypt<\/span>.\nBut the more I called to him,\u00a0 the farther he moved from me,\u00a0 offering sacrifices to the images of Baal\nand burning incense to idols.<\/p>\n<p>I myself taught Israel how to walk, leading him along by the hand.\nBut he doesn&#8217;t know or even care that it was I who took care of him.\nI led Israel along with my ropes of kindness and love.\nI lifted the yoke from his neck, and I myself stooped to feed him.\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Malachi 3:17<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;They will be my people,&#8221; says the Lord of Heaven&#8217;s Armies. &#8220;On the day when I act in judgment, they will be my own special treasure. I will spare them <span style=\"background-color: #00ff00;\">as a father spares an obedient child<\/span>.\u00a0\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .et-tabs-container -->\n<div class='et-box et-info'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This metaphor for God may have been avoided in the Old Testament due to its frequent use in the ancient Near East where it was used in various fertility religions and it carried heavy sexual overtones.<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Abba:\u00a0 Jesus Does Something New<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>But Jesus takes this metaphor and turns it on its head!\u00a0 Not only does He refer to God as a Fatherly Parent, He calls God a Loving Daddy!<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-11896\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/father-mountain-868394_960_720-400x300-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"father-mountain 868394_960_720 400x300\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/father-mountain-868394_960_720-400x300-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/father-mountain-868394_960_720-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Father&#8221; was Jesus&#8217; favorite term for addressing God. Jesus uses this name some 65 times in the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew\u2014Mark&#8212;Luke) and over 100 times in John.<\/p>\n<p>But He doesn&#8217;t simply call God &#8220;Father&#8221; as was done in the Old Testament.\u00a0 Jesus uses the Aramaic word Abba.\u00a0 This is intimate; this isn&#8217;t simply about God as a Father or disciplinary figure.\u00a0 Abba was a term little children used when they addressed their fathers. The nearest English equivalent to this term would be &#8220;Daddy&#8221;.\u00a0 Jesus called the Almighty God, &#8220;Daddy!&#8221;\u00a0 He paints an image of a child jumping into his father&#8217;s lap.\u00a0 Jesus shows us that our Creator wants us to feel safe and secure.\u00a0 God is a &#8220;Daddy&#8221; who will always welcome and is always there for us.<\/p>\n<p>When Jesus uses the word Abba, He&#8217;s not trying to tell us that God is a Male figure.\u00a0 He&#8217;s telling us that our relationship to God is what&#8217;s important.<\/p>\n<p>When the disciples ask Jesus to teach them how to pray, Jesus opens His model prayer with the words, &#8220;Our Father&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The Early Church Follows Jesus&#8217; Lead&#8230;<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>This is why the Greek-speaking Gentile churches in Galatia and Rome continued to address God as Abba. They used this foreign title for God because Jesus had used it and taught His followers to do the same thing.\u00a0 So it&#8217;s no surprise that the rest of the New Testament also emphasizes the Fatherhood of God. In Paul\u2019s letters God is described as &#8220;Father&#8221; over 40 times. The word &#8220;Father&#8221; was all about relationship; it had nothing to do with a patriarchal agenda of keeping all things male.\u00a0 When He said &#8220;Thy Kingdom Come, Thy Will be done on earth as it is in Heaven&#8221;\u00a0 He was talking about a relationship so tight that we are one with God- adopted into His family.\u00a0 He was talking about a relationship where we want to be God&#8217;s representative, to make His will be done on earth.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><div class='et-box et-warning'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mom\u2019s and Dad\u2019s-\u00a0 we have a RESPONSIBILITY to bring our children up in the training and instruction of the Lord. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Psalm 78, Deuteronomy 6, and many Bible passages tell us to teach our children as we sit down, as we stand up, as we walk along, as we lie down, and to pass on from one generation to the next the instructions of God.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ask God to give you direction, in the same way that we talk to our parents.\u00a0 Ask Him to place a &#8220;hedge of protection&#8221; around your family.<\/div><\/div><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">This is the One We Need to Imitate&#8230;<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>When Jesus called God &#8220;Our Father&#8221; in His model prayer, He was pointing us to a Heavenly Father&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-container et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_5000 et_slidertype_top_tabs'>\n\t\t\t\t<ul class='et-tabs-control'>\n\t\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\t1\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\t2\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\t3\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\t4\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\t5\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\t6\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\t7\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\t8\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul> <!-- .et-tabs-control --> \n\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-main-wrap'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The One who loves you and values and cherishes you&#8230;<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 (John 3:16)\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The One who includes you as a member of His divine family&#8230;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 (Ephesians 1:5)\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The One who knows the number of hairs on your head&#8230;<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don&#8217;t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.<\/span>\u00a0 (Luke 12:7 )\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The One who knows all about us and loves us anyway&#8230; <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">You spread out our sins before you\u2014 our secret sins\u2014and you see them all.\n<\/span>(Psalm\u00a090:8)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Even if we feel guilty, God is greater than our feelings, and he knows everything.\n<\/span>(1\u00a0John\u00a03:18)<\/p>\n<p><div class='et-learn-more clearfix'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class='heading-more'>Click here to learn more<span class='et_learnmore_arrow'><span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='learn-more-content'><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.\u00a0 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 (Hebrews 4:12-13)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Can anyone hide from me in a secret place? Am I not everywhere in all the heavens and earth?&#8221;<\/span>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> says the Lord.<\/span>\u00a0 (Jeremiah 23:24)<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\u00a0\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The One who meets our every need&#8230; <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 (Philippians\u00a04:19)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do,&#8221; says the Lord of Heaven&#8217;s Armies, &#8220;I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won&#8217;t have enough room to take it in! Try it! And when I forgive whatever needs to be forgiven, I do so with Christ&#8217;s authority for your benefit,\u00a0 so that Satan will not outsmart us. For God has said,<\/span>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8220;I will never fail you.\u00a0 I will never abandon you.<\/span> (Hebrews\u00a013:5)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you.
