I don&#8217;t have room for all my crops.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>18 Then he said, &#8216;I know! I&#8217;ll tear down my barns and build bigger ones. Then I&#8217;ll have room enough to store all my wheat and other goods.<\/p>\n<p>19 And I&#8217;ll sit back and say to myself, &#8220;My friend, you have enough stored away for years to come. Now take it easy! Eat, drink, and be merry!&#8221;&#8216;<\/p>\n<p>20 &#8220;But God said to him, &#8216;You fool! You will die this very night. (<span style=\"font-size: 8pt; color: #333333;\">1 Kings 3:9, NIV<\/span>)\n\t\t<\/div> <!-- .author-info -->\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .author-inner -->\n\t\t<\/div> <!-- .author-shortcodes -->\n\n\t\t<div class='author-shortcodes'>\n\t\t\t<div class='author-inner'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='author-image'>\n\t\t\t<img src='https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/et_temp\/Sistine-Chap-God-Face-177755_60x60.jpg' alt='' \/>\n\t\t\t<div class='author-overlay'><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div> <!-- .author-image --> \n\t\t<div class='author-info'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">GOD:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So God said to him, &#8220;Since you have asked for this and not for long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies but for discernment in administering justice,\u00a0 I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for \u2014 both riches and honor \u2014 so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings.\u00a0 And if you walk in my ways and obey my statutes and commands as David your father did, I will give you a long life.&#8221; (<span style=\"font-size: 8pt; color: #333333;\">1 Kings 3:11-14, NIV<\/span>)\n\t\t<\/div> <!-- .author-info -->\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .author-inner -->\n\t\t<\/div> <!-- .author-shortcodes -->\n<p>All of this sounds very similar to what Jesus said in Matthew 6:33&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.<\/span> <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Some people put other things first.\u00a0 They get it backwards:\u00a0 &#8220;<strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Once I ___, THEN I can seek the kingdom of God.<\/span><\/strong>&#8221;\u00a0 There&#8217;s nothing wrong with seeking a good job, having nice things in life, seeking to better oneself.\u00a0 But when that becomes the obsession of an individual, then God is usually pushed out of that person&#8217;s life.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Greyhounds &#8216;n Rabbits<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-11736\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/dog-859394_960_720-400x300-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"dog-859394_960_720 400x300\" width=\"204\" height=\"153\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/dog-859394_960_720-400x300-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/dog-859394_960_720-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 204px) 100vw, 204px\" \/>Of all the animals that are in this world, greyhounds are animals that are to be pitied the most.\u00a0 I say that because of the races they have.\u00a0 They chase something that they can never catch.\u00a0 Unlike most other dogs, when they chase a cat or a rabbit, they have a good chance of catching it.<\/p>\n<p>But the greyhound never catches what he is chasing.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know what the &#8220;rabbit&#8221; they chase is made of, but it&#8217;s not real.\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t have legs like a real rabbit, but scoots around the track on a rail.\u00a0 If by some chance the greyhound did catch up with that &#8220;rabbit,&#8221; he would be sadly disappointed&#8230; it&#8217;s only fake!<\/p>\n<p>People do the same thing!\u00a0 We chase our own &#8220;rabbits&#8221; of Money, Fame, and Pleasure&#8230; &#8220;<em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">eat drink and be merry, for tomorrow we shall die&#8230;<\/span><\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Education, Money, and health can all go in a flash.<\/p>\n<p>Many people are dissatisfied, discontent, ungrateful, always chasing something that we think will be bigger and better and provide the supreme happiness everyone is seeking.\u00a0 In actual fact, this is all a &#8220;fake rabbit.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">&#8220;Look at What I Did!&#8221;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Only Jesus truly satisfies!<\/p>\n<p>This is the point of the story He told in this morning&#8217;s passage (Luke 12:16-21).\u00a0 It&#8217;s about a farmer that we&#8217;ll call &#8220;Bigger Barns.&#8221;\u00a0 Bigger Barns was chasing fake rabbits: <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-11735 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/bunny-46935__180-100x200.jpg\" alt=\"bunny-46935__180 100x200\" width=\"182\" height=\"364\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Then he said, &#8216;I know! I&#8217;ll tear down my barns<br \/>\nand build bigger ones.<br \/>\nThen I&#8217;ll have room enough to store all my wheat<br \/>\nand other goods.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Bigger Barns is saying &#8220;Look at all that I have done!\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been so production that I&#8217;ve run out of space to store the fruits of my hard earned labor.&#8221;\u00a0 This sounds a lot like what Isaiah records Satan as saying in Isaiah 14:13&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">You said in your heart,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8220;<span style=\"background-color: #00ff00;\">I will<\/span> ascend to heaven;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"background-color: #00ff00;\">I will<\/span> raise <span style=\"background-color: #00ff00;\">my<\/span> throne<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">above the stars of God;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"background-color: #00ff00;\">I will<\/span> sit enthroned on the mount of assembly,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #003300; font-size: 14pt;\">I<\/span><\/strong>&#8230; \u00a0 <strong><span style=\"color: #003300; font-size: 14pt;\">I<\/span><\/strong>&#8230; \u00a0\u00a0 <strong><span style=\"color: #003300; font-size: 14pt;\">I <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; color: #800000;\">!<\/span>\u00a0 It&#8217;s all about him!\u00a0 That&#8217;s what Farmer Bigger Barns is doing.<\/p>\n<p>Notice that he doesn&#8217;t just build extra barns to add to his existing ones; he tears down his old barns and builds new ones.\u00a0 He has no intention of sharing this gift of a bountiful harvest.\u00a0 Old barns don&#8217;t look good; they don&#8217;t tell of his success.<\/p>\n<p>Bigger Barns didn&#8217;t head the words of James 1:27&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/em> NIV<\/p>\n<p>God blessed him so that he could &#8220;look after orphans&#8221;&#8230; so that he could share what he had.\u00a0 Instead, Bigger Barns chased the fake rabbit of promoting himself.\u00a0 And it was a fake rabbit because it had no lasting value&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8220;But God said to him, &#8216;You fool! You will die this very night.<br \/>\nThen who will get everything you worked for?&#8217;<\/span><\/em>\u00a0 (Luke 14:20)<\/p>\n<p>God is saying, &#8220;That&#8217;s not why I blessed you- so you could keep it all to yourself.&#8221;\u00a0 God blesses us so we can give it away and help Him build His kingdom. But Bigger Barns forgot all about God.\u00a0 He was focused on the Rabbit instead.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Then what???<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>There&#8217;s a sobering and very pointed story about a conversation between a young man and an older man which gives us something to bounce off this passage of scripture.\u00a0 It forces us to think of our priorities of life&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\t\t<div class='et-simple-slider et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_5001 et_slidertype_simple'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-simple-slides'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"color: #008000;\">OLDER MAN:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What will you do with your life?&#8221;\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tYOUNGER MAN:<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; &#8220;I will learn a trade.&#8221;\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"color: #008000;\">OLDER MAN<\/span>:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And then?&#8221;\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tYOUNGER MAN:<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; &#8220;I will set up a business.&#8221;\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"color: #008000;\">OLDER MAN<\/span>:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And then?&#8221;\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tYOUNGER MAN:<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; &#8220;I will make my fortune.&#8221;\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"color: #008000;\">OLDER MAN<\/span>:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And then?&#8221;\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tYOUNGER MAN:<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; &#8220;I will retire and live off my money.&#8221;\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"color: #008000;\">OLDER MAN<\/span>:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And then?&#8221;\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tYOUNGER MAN:<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; &#8220;I suppose one day I&#8217;ll die.&#8221;\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">OLDER MAN<\/span>:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">&#8220;And then?&#8221;<\/span><\/strong>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div> <!-- .et-simple-slider -->\n\t\t\n<p>How would YOU respond???\u00a0 This parable speaks to us in our modern times.\u00a0 Just substitute the word &#8220;Crops&#8221; with things like Career, Favors, Money, Reputation, and Entertainment and you&#8217;ll see that we are also tempted to build Bigger Barns instead of using our gifts to honor God.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-warning'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Paul reminds us in 2 Timothy 1:7-8&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.\u00a0\u00a0 So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord, or ashamed of me his prisoner. But join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God&#8230;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Who cares what the world thinks of you?\u00a0 Who cares if people get mad at you?\u00a0 We run into a big problem when we elevate the importance of other people&#8217;s opinion above God&#8217;s will.\u00a0 Anything that comes before God is Sin.<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Knowing\u00a0 or Knowing About???<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This parable creates tension.\u00a0 We want to gloss over it because it forces us to ask ourselves if we&#8217;re really doing our best for God, or are we building bigger barns to build up ourselves.\u00a0 Are we putting God first?<\/p>\n<p>Jesus confronts us and forces us to look within ourselves at the values and beliefs with which we operate. He wants us to realize that we are chasing &#8220;fake rabbits.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One of the fake rabbits that we chase is religion.\u00a0 We think that if we follow certain traditions and rules that all will be well.\u00a0 But Jesus didn&#8217;t come to build a religion; He came to create a relationship.<\/p>\n<p>To be &#8220;<em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">rich toward God<\/span><\/em>&#8221; as Jesus said in Luke 12:21 is to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ as Lord.\u00a0 Notice I said <strong>Personal<\/strong> relationship&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>I can tell you a lot of things ABOUT Ryan Howard: <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-11738\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Ryan-Howard-_100_0499-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Ryan Howard _100_0499\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Ryan-Howard-_100_0499-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Ryan-Howard-_100_0499.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He plays for the Philadelphia Phillies<\/li>\n<li>Has a shaved head<\/li>\n<li>Is 6&#8217;4&#8243; tall<\/li>\n<li>Is 36 years old<\/li>\n<li>Is originally from St. Louis Missouri<\/li>\n<li>Married his wife Krystal in 2012<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I can tell you all ABOUT Ryan Howard as a baseball celebrity, but in no way can I say that I have a personal relationship with him.\u00a0 I have (and continue) to cheer for him,\u00a0 and I appreciate his talent as a professional athlete.\u00a0 But I in no way have a personal relationship with him.<\/p>\n<p>In the same way, there are many who know who Jesus is.\u00a0 They know something about His life.\u00a0 They know a few things that have happened to Him.\u00a0 They might even be able to recall a few things He did in His life, but they do not have a personal relationship with Him.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Rabbits?\u00a0 Really???<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>We have a Divine Savior who somehow became a human and lived on this sin filled earth.
