This all happened three days ago.<\/p>\n<p>22 &#8220;Then some women from our group of his followers were at his tomb early this morning, and they came back with an amazing report.\u00a0 They said his body was missing, and they had seen angels who told them Jesus is alive!\u00a0 Some of our men ran out to see, and sure enough, his body was gone, just as the women had said.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>25 Then Jesus said to them, &#8220;You foolish people! You find it so hard to believe all that the prophets wrote in the Scriptures.\u00a0 Wasn&#8217;t it clearly predicted that the Messiah would have to suffer all these things before entering his glory?&#8221;\u00a0 Then Jesus took them through the writings of Moses and all the prophets, explaining from all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-11075\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Window-Emmaus-Communion-_IMG_0477-400x500-241x300.jpg\" alt=\"Window-Emmaus-Communion _IMG_0477 400x500\" width=\"241\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Window-Emmaus-Communion-_IMG_0477-400x500-241x300.jpg 241w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Window-Emmaus-Communion-_IMG_0477-400x500.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 241px) 100vw, 241px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>28 By this time they were nearing Emmaus and the end of their journey. Jesus acted as if he were going on,\u00a0 but they begged him, &#8220;Stay the night with us, since it is getting late.&#8221; So he went home with them.\u00a0 As they sat down to eat, he took the bread and blessed it. Then he broke it and gave it to them.\u00a0 Suddenly, their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And at that moment he disappeared!<\/p>\n<p>32 They said to each other, &#8220;Didn&#8217;t our hearts burn within us as he talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?&#8221;\u00a0 And within the hour they were on their way back to Jerusalem. There they found the eleven disciples and the others who had gathered with them,\u00a0 who said, &#8220;The Lord has really risen! He appeared to Peter.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>35 Then the two from Emmaus told their story of how Jesus had appeared to them as they were walking along the road, and how they had recognized him as he was breaking the bread.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Confusion!!!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The two disciples had heard it all.\u00a0 They heard the story from the women who said that the body wasn&#8217;t there.\u00a0 One of them even said that Jesus appeared to them!\u00a0 But, it didn&#8217;t make sense to these two disciples.\u00a0 The were fearful.\u00a0 They were confused, so they ran away.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s easy to get confused!<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-bio'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Everyone wants to be a Methodist! And if you are one, you&#8217;ll know that there&#8217;s nothing bigger than a BISHOP!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The story is told of a Bishop who was being driven by his chauffeur.\u00a0 They were late for their appointment, so the Bishop was getting anxious.\u00a0 But the chauffeur, being of good law abiding Methodist character, refused to assent to the Bishop&#8217;s demands to &#8220;Hurry it up!&#8221;\u00a0 So the Bishop told the chauffeur to pull over and switch positions.\u00a0 The chauffeur went to the back seat, the Bishop to the driver&#8217;s seat, and the limo&#8217;s speedometer ventured into regions it had never seen before! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But a vigilant police officer was on duty.\u00a0 And as the Bishop&#8217;s limo flashed past the hidden patrol car, the officer turned on the flashing lights, caught up to the Bishop, and pulled him over.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But the officer was a Methodist, and he was overwhelmed by the presence of a Bishop in the driver&#8217;s seat.\u00a0 He had to call his captain and figure out how to handle this sticky situation.\u00a0 He had pulled over someone even bigger than the President of the United States!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As the captain tried to get the details from the frantic officer, he came right out and asked him &#8220;who did you pull over?&#8221;\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The officer replied, &#8220;I don&#8217;t know.\u00a0 But he must be really important because he&#8217;s being driven by a Methodist Bishop!&#8221;<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<p>Confusion.\u00a0 Emotions can get in our way.\u00a0 Sadness, fear, disappointment&#8230; they all conspired in the disciples mind&#8217;s to make them forget what Jesus had taught them about His mission.\u00a0 He said He would be crucified and then rise again on the third day.<\/p>\n<p>They knew that the tomb was empty, but they didn&#8217;t embrace the resurrection.<\/p>\n<p>Many people today are still living as if this were the end of the story; the body is missing, but nobody knows where it went.\u00a0 The body is still missing.\u00a0 The story went out that during the night the disciples stole the body and made up the story that Jesus had risen from the dead.<\/p>\n<p>People are still living as if the body of Jesus is still missing.\u00a0 But if it simply boils down to &#8220;the body is missing&#8221;, are you experiencing the Resurreciton?\u00a0 Does it have any impact on your life?<\/p>\n<p>Cleopas and his fellow disciple had not experienced the resurrection.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The Conversation that Caused a Conversion from Confusion&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The two disciples are walking 7 miles back home to Emmaus from Jerusalem.\u00a0 Jesus joins them in their walk, but like Mary (who we looked at last week), they did not recognize Him.\u00a0 Maybe they were too preoccupied with shattered dreams to recognize Him.\u00a0 After all, the last time they saw Him was when His lifeless body was being taken down from the cross.<\/p>\n<p>But it is Jesus who initiates this conversation.\u00a0 It is Jesus who finds these two fleeing disciples.\u00a0 It is Jesus who speaks first.<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-warning'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jesus is trying to initiate a conversation with us too!\u00a0 But could it be, like these disciples, that we&#8217;re too preoccupied or too busy to hear Him?<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<p>The disciples didn&#8217;t recognize Jesus.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Here are some possible reasons:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">1:\u00a0 They were Too busy<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>When we&#8217;re worried, we&#8217;re focused on self.\u00a0 When we&#8217;re too busy, we&#8217;re focused on self.\u00a0 When we&#8217;re busy with meetings and &#8220;more important things to do,&#8221; we&#8217;re focused on process instead of people.\u00a0 These wrong perceptions can cause us to miss the hand of God when He steps into our midst.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">2: They weren&#8217;t Looking for Him<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>These disciples were going in the wrong direction!\u00a0 Mary, and Peter, and John entered the empty tomb to see for themselves.\u00a0 But Cleopas and friend ran away.\u00a0 It&#8217;s as if they were saying, &#8220;Easter break is over, now let&#8217;s get back to the important things in life like work, school, and living life the way I want to live it.&#8221;\u00a0 Like the Israelites fleeing from Pharaoh, the disciples were focused on &#8220;bread&#8221; and &#8220;meat&#8221; instead of God.<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-warning'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What do you see? What&#8217;s your perception? If you look out your window and see a sight like the one pictured below, what do you see?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8705 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Alaska-ArtShal_300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Alaska ArtShal_300x300\" width=\"124\" height=\"124\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Alaska-ArtShal_300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Alaska-ArtShal_300x300-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Alaska-ArtShal_300x300-178x178.jpg 178w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Alaska-ArtShal_300x300-184x184.jpg 184w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 124px) 100vw, 124px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A Lake?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A boat blocking a great view of some trees?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Some trees blocking the view of a mountain?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A mountain blocking a great view of some clouds?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p>The disciples were looking for a &#8220;mountain,&#8221; or &#8220;boats, or a &#8220;lake&#8221;&#8230; but not for Jesus! \u00a0 The disciples didn&#8217;t see Jesus because they were focused on returning to &#8220;the good &#8216;ole days.&#8221;\u00a0 Like Peter in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=john+21&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\">John 21:3<\/a><\/span>, they wanted to go back to &#8220;fishing&#8221;; back to where they were before Jesus entered their lives.\u00a0 What drives your train?\u00a0 What do you want to see?\u00a0 What are you looking for?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">3: They were without Hope<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Who do you hang around with?\u00a0 Many of us like to join the Eeyore crowd!\u00a0 This Winnie the Pooh donkey always had a cloud over his head.\u00a0 The disciples were full of gloom.\u00a0 Their ears heard the reports from the women who saw the resurrected Jesus, but their Eeyore cloud prevented them from seeing what had really happened.\u00a0 They said, &#8220;I know what the women said, but___.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Jesus took them to the Scriptures to get them over their Eeyore Complex.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>See where there was a fourth man in Nebuccadnezar&#8217;s\u00a0 furnace (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=daniel+3%3A1-25&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Daniel 3:26<\/span>)<\/a>?\u00a0 That was Me!!!<\/li>\n<li>See where ___??? That was Me!!!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Our 11:00 Call to Worship drew us towards the hope of the resurrected Jesus&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800080;\">The\u00a0light of the Resurrected Jesus is the only light we need as we travel through life.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800080;\">The\u00a0voice of the Resurrected Jesus is a voice\u00a0 we all need to hear as we journey down life&#8217;s road.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800080;\">The\u00a0still small voice of the Resurrected Jesus will\u00a0lead us and guide us to the place where we should be.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800080;\">The\u00a0presence of the Resurrected Jesus is the companion\u00a0we need as we walk the narrow road.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800080;\">May the truth of Easter\u2026<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800080;\">&#8230;The joy of Easter\u2026<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800080;\">and the blessings of Easter,<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800080;\">be with us now as we worship, and be with us forevermore!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n<p>Despair can cloud our vision of the Resurrected Jesus.\u00a0 But the Resurrected Jesus seeks to remove our despair.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">4:\u00a0 They had an Arm&#8217;s Length Relationship<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>As they walked with this stranger, they grew more and more interested in what He was saying.\u00a0 But at first, they greeted Him by saying, &#8220;<em><span style=\"color: #003300;\">You must be the only person in Jerusalem who hasn&#8217;t heard about all the things that have happened there the last few days.<\/span><\/em>&#8221;\u00a0 In other words, &#8220;we were there&#8230; you were not&#8230; you&#8217;re not one of us&#8230; you&#8217;re a stranger.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4345\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Stained-Glass-Knock-_DCP_7065-300x213.jpg\" alt=\"Stained Glass- Knock _DCP_7065\" width=\"183\" height=\"130\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Stained-Glass-Knock-_DCP_7065-300x213.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Stained-Glass-Knock-_DCP_7065.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 183px) 100vw, 183px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But by the end of the passage they were &#8220;<em><span style=\"color: #003300;\">begging Him to stay the night<\/span><\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Jesus started the conversation, but He doesn&#8217;t barge in.\u00a0 Just like the image of Jesus standing outside of a closed door, we need to turn the knob and invite Him in.\u00a0 If the disciples had maintained their &#8220;arm&#8217;s length relationship,&#8221; Jesus would have gone on without them (leaving them in their gloom and confusion).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">5:\u00a0 They didn&#8217;t Pay Attention<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The disciples didn&#8217;t recognize Jesus until they sat down at the table.\u00a0 Could it be that Jesus was wearing a robe that covered His brow and hands?\u00a0 When they sat down, turned their eyes on Jesus, they saw His nail scared head, hands and feet.<\/p>\n<p>The Word prepared their hearts and allowed them to begin to see Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Jesus Pursues You!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>At first, the two disciples weren&#8217;t able to recognize Jesus or to embrace His resurrection.\u00a0 But Jesus kept knocking on the door; He kept walking with them.\u00a0 And He&#8217;ll do the same for you.<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">David Redding tells of having a big, black Scottish shepherd as a pet when he was growing up on a farm in the country.\u00a0 He named the dog Teddy and they became inseparable companions.\u00a0 Teddy would wait on him to come home from school at the bus stop.\u00a0 Teddy slept at the foot of his bed.\u00a0 Teddy came whenever David whistled a tune.\u00a0 During the night, no one could bet within a half mile of their farm without Teddy&#8217;s permission.\u00a0 The boy and his dog were inseparable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Then World War II came, and David went away to boot camp.\u00a0 He was then shipped overseas for three years.\u00a0 Finally, the day came when he could go home.\u00a0 He simply threw his duffle bag over his shoulder and started walking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It must have been two o&#8217;clock in the morning as he neared the farm.\u00a0 It was pitch dark, but he knew every step of the way.\u00a0 Suddenly, the dog heard someone on the road and began to bark.\u00a0 David said, &#8220;I whistled only once and Teddy stopped barking.\u00a0 There was a yelp or recognition, and I knew that a big, black dog was running toward me in the darkness.\u00a0 Almost immediately, he was there and in my arms.\u00a0 He knew me.\u00a0 He recognized me.\u00a0 He loved me.\u00a0 Even after three years, he recognized me and loved me.&#8221;<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<p>A modern day version of the prodigal son (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke+15%3A11-32&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\">Luke 15:11-32<\/a>)!\u00a0 Just like this dog, the father longed for the return of his son.\u00a0 And just like our Heavenly Father, He longs for the return of us!<\/p>\n<p>Along the same lines as this dog, our Savior&#8217;s love is so great that He wants to &#8220;jump into our arms.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Once you Recognize Jesus, things will never be the Same!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Whenever there is a recognition of love, there is joy.\u00a0 Cleopas and his companion made a marvelous discovery that evening in their home.\u00a0 They recognized the risen Lord.\u00a0 They recognized that He was with them.\u00a0 And this recognition brought joy to their lives.\u00a0 And just as when Mary recognized the risen Jesus at the tomb, that recognition changed their lives forever.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe you feel as if you&#8217;re a personification of Murphy&#8217;s Law.\u00a0 But God wants to make all things new.\u00a0 When you recognize Jesus, God changes you.\u00a0 Big time.\u00a0 You don&#8217;t want to stay in Emmaus.\u00a0 You want to go to Jerusalem, you want to take on the new exciting life that God has planned for you.\u00a0 Once you&#8217;ve experienced the love and power of the Resurrection, you never want to go back to the old way of doing things.\u00a0 You don&#8217;t want to stay in your old home of Emmaus.\u00a0 You want to keep moving forward.<\/p>\n<p>The disciples immediately returned to Jerusalem, saying,\u00a0 &#8220;Didn&#8217;t our hearts burn within us as he talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Jesus didn&#8217;t come to start a new Religion.\u00a0 He came to forge a New Relationship with YOU!\u00a0 Just as Jesus left the tomb, He wants you to commit to Him.<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In a church&#8217;s Easter pageant there was a scene where a large cardboard box was used for the tomb of Jesus.\u00a0 There was a young boy inside the box playing the part of the angel.\u00a0 At one point he was to say, &#8220;He is not here.\u00a0 He has risen.\u00a0 Com see the place where he lay.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But he forgot his line!\u00a0 Nevertheless, the show must go on and when it came time for his line, with all the energy he could muster he yelled out: &#8220;He ain&#8217;t here.\u00a0 He&#8217;s done gone!<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<p>The resurrection of Jesus announces that where sin abounded, grace did much more abound&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">All that passing laws against sin did was produce more lawbreakers. But sin didn&#8217;t, and doesn&#8217;t, have a chance in competition with the aggressive forgiveness we call grace. When it&#8217;s sin versus grace, grace wins hands down.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Romans 5:20, The Message<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Easter announces that righteousness, decency, and kindness are stronger than sin, human corruption, and violence.<\/p>\n<p>The tomb is not only empty, but Jesus is alive!\u00a0 As you walk the road of this life, Jesus will join you and walk by your side.\u00a0 He has promised to &#8220;never leave you or forsake you&#8221;&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Since God assured us, &#8220;I&#8217;ll never let you down, never walk off and leave you,&#8221;\u00a0 we can boldly quote,<\/span><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">God is there, ready to help;
