I recently received an ad about mortgages.\u00a0 The glossy letter was topped by the words, “OMG- What a great rate!”\u00a0 (For the “cell phone challenged” among us, “OMG” is a commonly used texting abbreviation meaning “Oh My God!”<\/em><\/span>)
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Really?\u00a0 Invoking the Name of our Creator over an interest rate?\u00a0 Yes, God cares about every detail about our lives. \u00a0 But the casual use of the expression “Oh My God!” can’t help but bring the following verse to mind:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t
Ex 20:7<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n

Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. KJV<\/em> <\/span><\/p>\n

Or, as Eugene Peterson wrote in his paraphrase called “The Message”…<\/span><\/p>\n

No using the name of GOD, your God, in curses or silly banter; GOD won’t put up with the irreverent use of his name.<\/span><\/em> (from THE MESSAGE: The Bible in Contemporary Language \u00a9 2002 by Eugene H. Peterson. All rights reserved.)<\/div><\/div>\n

How often do we allow “silly banter” to replace the awe that we should have for our infinite God?\u00a0 The “silly banter” in this advertisement pales in significance when compared to the “rate” that God offers us.\u00a0 Here are a couple more familiar verses…<\/span><\/p>\n

John 3:16…<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.<\/span><\/em> KJV<\/p>\n

And Ephesians\u00a0 2:8-9…<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith \u2014 and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God\u2014 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. <\/span><\/em>\nNIV<\/div><\/div>\n

\u00a0Because of God’s love, He GAVE.\u00a0 Salvation- meaningful\u00a0 life- is a GIFT!\u00a0 Now, that’s a better rate than any bank could ever offer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
