Chris Heckert, who is now serving as the senior pastor in the Haddonfield United Methodist Church.\u00a0 Pastor Chris was our associate pastor between 2004 and 2006 (during our &#8220;tabernacling days&#8221; after the fire while we met in the downtown storefront).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">During his time here he blessed us with his amazing guitar playing, real-life sermons (with heartfelt stories about his school teachers while growing up in western PA), and with his love and leadership as a brother in Christ.<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Means of Grace<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Pastor Chris opened his time with us by giving us the background on a 300 year old sermon.\u00a0 No, it wasn&#8217;t given by Pastor Jim&#8230; this sermon was given by John Wesley, and it rattled the established church.\u00a0 The sermon and the topic Wesley preached has become to be known as the \u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.umc.org\/how-we-serve\/the-wesleyan-means-of-grace\" target=\"_blank\">Wesleyan Means of Grace.<\/a><\/span>\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Wesley presented the church with the challenge that they were looking at certain church practices such as communion as an end unto themselves.\u00a0 Instead, he urged us to look at sacraments such as communion, baptism, and even prayer and worship to be only various means to a common end.<\/p>\n<p>The things done by a church must bring people into God&#8217;s arms of grace (both those inside the church and outside of it).\u00a0 Much of what the church does is done (sometimes better) by other organizations.\u00a0 The Kiwanis Club, Scouts, and even bowling leagues provide things which are similar to what the church provides.\u00a0 But the church is the one organization which must purpose to do these same things as a means to bring people into a closer relationship with God.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">What, How, and Why?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>We&#8217;re good at planning the &#8220;Whats&#8221;: Sunday worship, Bible School, Tuesday Night Dinners, Men&#8217;s Fellowship &#8220;Gatherings&#8221;&#8230; even church website posts.\u00a0 We can even work out the &#8220;Hows&#8221; of how we organize and put these activities together.<\/p>\n<p>But where&#8217;s the &#8220;Why&#8221; in all of it?<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;Whats&#8221; and the &#8220;Hows&#8221; can change over time in order to adapt to an ever changing audience and circumstances.\u00a0 But our &#8220;Why&#8221; should be consistent.\u00a0 Consider two companies: Blackberry and Apple&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-container et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_5000 et_slidertype_top_tabs'>\n\t\t\t\t<ul class='et-tabs-control'>\n\t\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tBLACKBERRY\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tAPPLE\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul> <!-- .et-tabs-control --> \n\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-main-wrap'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tBlackberry made the first &#8220;smart phone&#8221; devices. Their goal was to make a device which brought &#8220;email to the hip.&#8221; They created portable Internet access. When other companies started to do the same thing, and began to do it better than them, they had nowhere to go.<\/p>\n<p>Their &#8220;What&#8221; had been surpassed, and they had no guidance of a solid &#8220;Why&#8221; to lead them to the next stage.\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tApple had (has) a much broader vision. From the beginning, they were focused on the &#8220;Why,&#8221; and were open to adapting their &#8220;What&#8221; and &#8220;How&#8221; in order to further their purpose.<\/p>\n<p>Apple&#8217;s goal is to put technology into the hands of common people.\u00a0 Big companies and the government has access to huge, powerful&#8230; and expensive technologies.\u00a0 But Apple wanted to give that same access to the common person.\u00a0 Their &#8220;Why&#8221; isn&#8217;t limited to simply being a great Mobile Device or even computer company. \u00a0 Their &#8220;Why&#8221; is to make technology available to anyone.\u00a0 Their products can change in order to advance their vision.\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .et-tabs-container -->\n<div class='et-box et-bio'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Martin Luther King Jr said<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7185\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Memorial-ML-King-_IMG_1881-218x300.jpg\" alt=\"Memorial-ML King _IMG_1881\" width=\"107\" height=\"147\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Memorial-ML-King-_IMG_1881-218x300.jpg 218w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Memorial-ML-King-_IMG_1881.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 107px) 100vw, 107px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> &#8220;<span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #800080;\">I Have a Dream<\/span>&#8220;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> not <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;<span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #800080;\">I have a Plan.<\/span>&#8221;\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He never lost his vision of the &#8220;Why&#8221;:\u00a0 the ever pressing dream of equality and justice.<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Why, not What!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Why is the church here?\u00a0 What&#8217;s our purpose?\u00a0 We\u00a0 provide things such as friendship, support, encouragement, education, and worship.\u00a0 These are our &#8220;Whats.&#8221;\u00a0 But other\u00a0 organizations outside of the church provide many of the same things.\u00a0 If other worthwhile organizations and activities can provide the same &#8220;Whats&#8221; we strive to provide, why are we here?<\/p>\n<p>Wesley said that religion is evil unless it is a religion of the heart.\u00a0 If it doesn&#8217;t lead us to experience God and to love God, it&#8217;s useless.\u00a0 Religion must transform hearts, or faith is dead.\u00a0 If we don&#8217;t have a clear vision of the &#8220;Why&#8221;, all of the things we do (the &#8220;Whats&#8221;) will go nowhere.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">So What is Our Why?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>When we think of the church, and more specifically, disciples of Jesus Christ, we are reminded of His commandment in Matthew 22:37-40:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8220;&#8216;Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.&#8217;\u00a0\u00a0 This is the first and greatest commandment.\u00a0 And the second is like it: &#8216;Love your neighbor as yourself.&#8217;\u00a0\u00a0 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.&#8221;<\/span> <\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This is the unique command to the Church- to love God with complete devotion and to share the fruits of that relationship with our neighbors.\u00a0 When Paul talks about Love in 1 Corinthians 13 he&#8217;s talking about something that runs against worldly culture&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\t\t<div class='et-simple-slider et_sliderfx_slide et_sliderauto_true et_sliderauto_speed_4000 et_slidertype_simple'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-simple-slides'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tBe patient (even in a traffic jam)&#8230;\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tBe kind (even in a supermarket line)&#8230;\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tBe content (even if your friend gets a new car)&#8230;\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tDon&#8217;t demand your own way (even when traffic is merging into your lane)&#8230;\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tDon&#8217;t delight in evil (even when your least favorite politician gets caught)&#8230;\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div> <!-- .et-simple-slider -->\n\t\t\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The apostle John tells us (in 1 John 4:7-12)&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.\u00a0 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.\u00a0 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.\u00a0 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.<\/span> <\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The &#8220;Why&#8221; of the church, then is to Love.\u00a0 Even in the face of going against worldly convention; even in the face of ridicule, doubt and outright opposition, our vision- our &#8220;Why&#8221;- is to love.\u00a0 Everything we do must lead to Love; both Love for God and Love for our neighbors.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Hitting the Target<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Simon Simek, an author and expert on leadership models, has proposed a 3-ring target figure showing the relationship between an organization&#8217;s &#8220;Why&#8221;, &#8220;What&#8221;, and &#8220;How.&#8221;\u00a0 In this figure, the &#8220;Why&#8221; is the bulls eye- at the <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-10202\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Target-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Target\" width=\"192\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Target-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Target-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Target-178x178.jpg 178w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Target-184x184.jpg 184w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Target.jpg 306w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 192px) 100vw, 192px\" \/>center of\u00a0 the diagram.\u00a0 The next ring outwards is &#8220;How&#8221;, and the outer ring is &#8220;What.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Why&#8230;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the church, the inner (red) ring is <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Love<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0 All that we do must be drawn towards the vision of love for God and for our neighbors.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">How&#8230;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But how do we love?\u00a0 We love (and are loved) by building <strong><span style=\"color: #5bb5b5;\">Relationships<\/span><\/strong> with each other.\u00a0 It is through these relationships that we encourage eachother in the faith, where we become valuable to others, where we know others so we can express and receive love.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">What&#8230;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What we do is to offer Experiences.\u00a0 We offer and share in <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Experiences<\/span><\/strong> such as Bible study, worship, dinners, and even pizza and bowling so that we can build relationships with God and each other so that we can love God and each other.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-10195\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/UMM-Pastor-Chris-2016-01-09-_IMG_2915-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"UMM Pastor Chris 2016-01-09 _IMG_2915\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/UMM-Pastor-Chris-2016-01-09-_IMG_2915-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/UMM-Pastor-Chris-2016-01-09-_IMG_2915.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Traveling the Target<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Love is not only the goal,\u00a0 it is the driving force.\u00a0 This diagram shows us that we move through the three rings.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a progression.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">We move inwards<\/span><\/strong>&#8230;\u00a0 We do things together; experiences.\u00a0 Through these experiences we build relationships.\u00a0 We build trust.\u00a0 And from those relationships we move on to Love.\u00a0 We share and sacrifice for each other.\u00a0 And we learn from each other and are motivated by each other so we can grow into a more loving relationship with God.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">And we also move outwards<\/span><\/strong>&#8230;\u00a0 Because of our love for God we reach out to others and get to know them. We get to know their needs, pains, and fears.\u00a0 From there we can move outwards to engage in experiences which help fill these needs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">=====================<\/p>\n<p>If we focus on the &#8220;What&#8221; and don&#8217;t have a clear vision of the &#8220;Why&#8221;, we&#8217;ll miss this progression.\u00a0 Our &#8220;Whats&#8221; might be great things for a moment, but without a firm &#8220;Why&#8221; foundation, they will quickly grow stale.<\/p>\n<p>The question for all of us:\u00a0 Do the things we do drive us into a deeper Love relationship with God?\u00a0 If not, all of our activity is like\u00a0 &#8220;a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.&#8221; (1 Corinthians 13:1).<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">What&#8217;s YOUR Why???<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-info'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">Pastor Chris is also a communications expert and avid photographer.
