About that time some wise men from eastern lands arrived in Jerusalem, asking,<\/p>\n<p>2 &#8220;Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star as it rose, and we have come to worship him.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>3 King Herod was deeply disturbed when he heard this, as was everyone in Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p>4 He called a meeting of the leading priests and teachers of religious law and asked, &#8220;Where is the Messiah supposed to be born?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>5 &#8220;In Bethlehem in Judea,&#8221; they said, &#8220;for this is what the prophet wrote:<\/p>\n<p>6 &#8216;And you, O Bethlehem in the land of Judah, are not least among the ruling cities of Judah, for a ruler will come from you who will be the shepherd for my people Israel.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>7 Then Herod called for a private meeting with the wise men, and he learned from them the time when the star first appeared.<\/p>\n<p>8 Then he told them, &#8220;Go to Bethlehem and search carefully for the child. And when you find him, come back and tell me so that I can go and worship him, too!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>9 After this interview the wise men went their way. And the star they had seen in the east guided them to Bethlehem. It went ahead of them and stopped over the place where the child was.<\/p>\n<p>10 When they saw the star, they were filled with joy!<\/p>\n<p>11 They entered the house and saw the child with his mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasure chests and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.<\/p>\n<p>12 When it was time to leave, they returned to their own country by another route, for God had warned them in a dream not to return to Herod.<\/p>\n<p>NLT<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Epiphany!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Wednesday January 6 is the first day of the season of Epiphany on the Christian Calendar.\u00a0 The word Epiphany means:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #003300;\">Revelation<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #003300;\">Manifestation<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-download'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Epiphany talks about how this Jewish Messiah was revealed to the Gentile world.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s how Paul put it&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">But God has protected me right up to this present time so I can testify to everyone, from the least to the greatest. I teach nothing except what the prophets and Moses said would happen\u2014\u00a0 that the Messiah would suffer and be the first to rise from the dead, and in this way <span style=\"background-color: #00ff00;\">announce God&#8217;s light to Jews and Gentiles alike.<\/span>&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/strong> Acts 26:22-23<\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Th birth of Jesus took place in a Jewish environment; an environment of constant oppression.\u00a0 When Jesus was born,\u00a0 it was the Romans&#8217; thumb upon the people, but throughout their entire history we see that the Jewish people constantly need the Hope of a Messiah.<\/p>\n<p>Over and over again, throughout the Bible, we are promised a Savior who will rescue us from oppression- oppression from the evil powers of the world, and oppression caused by our sinful separation from God.\u00a0 But this promise isn&#8217;t just for Israel!\u00a0 The promise applies to Gentiles too! The promise applies to those foreign Wise Men who mysteriously came &#8220;from the East.&#8221; \u00a0\u00a0 He was to be the Savior of ALL peoples&#8230;.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-container et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_5000 et_slidertype_top_tabs'>\n\t\t\t\t<ul class='et-tabs-control'>\n\t\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tJohn 8\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tActs 13\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tMalachi 4\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tIsaiah 9\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tJob 33\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tActs 26\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tIsaiah 60\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tPsalm 18\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tJohn 1\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul> <!-- .et-tabs-control --> \n\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-main-wrap'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">John 8:12<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, &#8220;I am the light <span style=\"background-color: #00ff00;\">of the world<\/span>. If you follow me, you won&#8217;t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.&#8221;\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Acts 13:47<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 For the Lord gave us this command when he said, &#8216;I have made you a light to the Gentiles, to bring <span style=\"background-color: #00ff00;\">salvation to the farthest corners of the earth.<\/span>&#8216;&#8221;\u00a0\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Malachi 4:2\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 &#8220;But <span style=\"background-color: #00ff00;\">for you who fear my name<\/span>, the Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing in his wings. And you will go free, leaping with joy like calves let out to pasture.\u00a0\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Isaiah 9:2<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 The people who walk in darkness will see a great light. <span style=\"background-color: #00ff00;\">For those who live in a land of deep darkness,<\/span> a light will shine.\u00a0\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong>Job 33:28-30<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 God rescued me from the grave, and now my life is filled with light.&#8217;\u00a0 &#8220;Yes, <span style=\"background-color: #00ff00;\">God does these things again and again for people<\/span>.\u00a0 He rescues them from the grave so they may enjoy the light of life.\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Acts 26:23<\/span><\/strong> \u00a0 &#8230;that the Messiah would suffer and be the first to rise from the dead, and in this way announce God&#8217;s <span style=\"background-color: #00ff00;\">light to Jews and Gentiles alike.<\/span>&#8221;\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Isaiah 60:1-3<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;Arise, Jerusalem! Let your light shine <span style=\"background-color: #00ff00;\">for all<\/span> to see. For the glory of the Lord rises to shine on you.\u00a0 Darkness as black as night covers all the nations of the earth, but the glory of the Lord rises and appears over you.\u00a0<span style=\"background-color: #00ff00;\"> All nations will come to your light<\/span>; mighty kings will come to see your radiance.\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Psalm 18:27-28<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <span style=\"background-color: #00ff00;\">You rescue the humble<\/span>, but you humiliate the proud.\u00a0 You light a lamp for me. The Lord, my God, lights up my darkness.\n\t\t<\/div>\n<p>\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">John 1:4-9<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone.\u00a0 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.\u00a0 God sent a man, John the Baptist,\u00a0 to tell about the light so that everyone might believe because of his testimony.\u00a0 John himself was not the light; he was simply a witness to tell about the light.<\/p>\n<p>9 The one who is the true light, who <span style=\"background-color: #00ff00;\">gives light to everyone<\/span>, was coming into the world.\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .et-tabs-container -->\n<p>The whole idea of Christmas is to embrace The Messiah.\u00a0 The goal of Epiphany is to make ourselves a revelation of Christ to the lost world.<\/p>\n<p>The visit of the Magi to Bethlehem is the first manifestation of the newborn Savior to people outside the Jewish community.\u00a0 The traditional date for celebrating this Epiphany is January 6, twelve days after Christmas.\u00a0 So we&#8217;re at the threshold of a new spiritual season, which will last until Ash Wednesday (February 10)- which is the beginning of Lent.<\/p>\n<p>Our goal of the Christian calendar is that we can be living epiphanies of Christ to the world.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-5360 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/holy-three-kings-528007__180.jpg\" alt=\"holy-three-kings-528007__180\" width=\"181\" height=\"128\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So who were these &#8220;Wise Guys&#8221; anyway???\u00a0 The hymn tells us &#8220;We three\u00a0 kings of Orient are&#8230;&#8221;\u00a0 We get the picture of three guys traveling through the desert on three camels.\u00a0\u00a0 But Matthew doesn&#8217;t give us a lot of details.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few things that Matthew DOESN&#8217;T tell us&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<div class='tabs-left et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_5000 et_slidertype_left_tabs clearfix'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et_left_tabs_bg'><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<ul class='et-tabs-control'>\n\t\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tKINGS\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tCAMELS\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tTHREE\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tORIENT\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul> <!-- .et-tabs-control --> \n\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-main-wrap'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tMatthew doesn&#8217;t say anything about Kings.\u00a0 He just writes &#8220;some wise men from Eastern lands.&#8221; (TLB, verse 1).\u00a0 Most English translations use the same words (&#8220;Wise Men&#8221;), but others use the word &#8220;Magi.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The notion that they were&#8221;kings&#8221; may have come from Isaiah 60:3&#8230; \u00a0 <strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Nations will come to your light,<\/span><\/em><\/strong>\n<strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">and <span style=\"background-color: #00ff00;\">kings<\/span> to the brightness of your dawn.<\/span><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0\n\t\t<\/div><\/p>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tMatthew doesn&#8217;t say they rode on camels either.\u00a0 That may have come from Isaiah 60 too (verse 6)&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Herds of camels will cover your land, young camels of Midian and Ephah.<\/span><\/em><\/strong>\n<strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">And all from Sheba will come, bearing gold and incense<\/span><\/em><\/strong>\n<strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">and proclaiming the praise of the Lord.<\/span> <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tMatthew doesn&#8217;t tell us there were three of them either.\u00a0 That&#8217;s inferred from the number of gifts (Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh).\u00a0 This wasn&#8217;t just a caravan of three guys on a field trip.\u00a0 There arrival caused quite a stir; they&#8217;re may have been 100s of them.<\/p>\n<p>And the image of the &#8220;Three Wise Men&#8221; at the manger doesn&#8217;t fit either.\u00a0 It would have taken them 6-18 months to reach Bethlehem.\u00a0 And notice that verse 11 says that &#8220;when they had come into the HOUSE, they saw the YOUNG CHILD&#8230;&#8221;\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tMatthew simply tells us that they came from &#8220;the east.&#8221;\u00a0 Possibly this was from Mesopotamia or Persia, but there is no clear identification.<\/p>\n<p>The seeds for their vision were probably planted by Daniel, Ezekiel, and even Esther.\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .tabs-left -->\n<p>We do know about the Magi from other sources.\u00a0 They were a class of astrologers, men who studied the stars for <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-9516\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Christmas-Parade-2015-11-28-Lot-_IMG_4323-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Christmas Parade 2015-11-28 - Lot _IMG_4323\" width=\"169\" height=\"127\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Christmas-Parade-2015-11-28-Lot-_IMG_4323-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Christmas-Parade-2015-11-28-Lot-_IMG_4323.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 169px) 100vw, 169px\" \/>guidance.\u00a0 Of course, such people would be on the lookout for special signs in the heavens.\u00a0 But how did they know this particular star was going to lead them to the Christ?\u00a0 The Magi were priests of another religion; why did they want to find the Messiah of Israel in the first place?\u00a0 Of all these details we&#8217;re quite in the dark.\u00a0 All we know is that they came looking for the King of the Jews,\u00a0 following his star, but not knowing exactly where it was taking them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">1:\u00a0 The Magi Brought Change<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Listening again to this familiar story, it begs a question:\u00a0 &#8220;How come the religious leaders of Jerusalem didn&#8217;t notice <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-5361 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Nativity-Star-_12.59.22-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Nativity Star _12.59.22\" width=\"176\" height=\"132\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Nativity-Star-_12.59.22-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Nativity-Star-_12.59.22.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 176px) 100vw, 176px\" \/>that star until the Wise Men called their attention to it&#8221;?\u00a0 Why weren&#8217;t they excited about the possibility that their Messiah had been born in Bethlehem?\u00a0 Why didn&#8217;t they prepare some gifts for the King of the Jews?<\/p>\n<p>They all knew that Bethlehem was\u00a0 where their new ruler was supposed to come from, just as the prophet Micah had said (Micah 5:2)&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8220;But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, <\/span><\/em><\/strong><strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">out of you will come for me <\/span><\/em><\/strong><strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">one who will be ruler over Israel, <\/span><\/em><\/strong><strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">whose origins are from of old, <\/span><\/em><\/strong><strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">from ancient times.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But they didn&#8217;t recognize what was going on.\u00a0 They could recite the facts but they couldn&#8217;t understand because they weren&#8217;t looking for the Messiah.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, if they were doing any looking at all, it was to Look OUT for the Messiah!\u00a0 They were happy with their current status, privileges, and power.\u00a0 When the Magi asked about the &#8220;King of the Jews,&#8221; Herod was beyond upset.\u00a0 He was ticked off; he was irate!\u00a0 Furious!!!<\/p>\n<p>The Magi &#8220;got it&#8221; and responded by welcoming God&#8217;s gift.\u00a0 Herod, and the powers that be, turned a deaf ear to the good news.\u00a0 None of the &#8220;Religious People&#8221; went to Bethlehem.\u00a0 The ones who were going to worship every week missed it!\u00a0 They were committed to some religion and not to God.\u00a0 They didn&#8217;t expect God to show up!<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-warning'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Now before we come down too hard on the religious faithful of that day, how aware, how excited, how filled with anticipation are WE to worship, celebrate, and do whatever is necessary for our Messiah?\u00a0 How truly committed to this Messiah are WE?\u00a0 When we pray, do we really believe that God will answer?\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">An anonymous poet wrote the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800000; font-size: 14pt;\">Three thousand for my brand new car, <\/span><\/em>\n<em><span style=\"color: #800000; font-size: 14pt;\"> Five thousand for a piece of sod, <\/span><\/em>\n<em><span style=\"color: #800000; font-size: 14pt;\">Ten thousand I paid to begin a house \u2014 <\/span><\/em>\n<em><span style=\"color: #800000; font-size: 14pt;\"> A dollar I gave to God. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800000; font-size: 14pt;\">A tidy sum to entertain <\/span><\/em>\n<em><span style=\"color: #800000; font-size: 14pt;\"> My friends in pointless chatter, <\/span><\/em>\n<em><span style=\"color: #800000; font-size: 14pt;\">And when the world goes crazy mad <\/span><\/em>\n<em><span style=\"color: #800000; font-size: 14pt;\"> I ask, &#8221; Lord, what&#8217;s the matter? &#8221; <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800000; font-size: 14pt;\">Yet, there is one big question, <\/span><\/em>\n<em><span style=\"color: #800000; font-size: 14pt;\"> For the answer I still search <\/span><\/em>\n<em><span style=\"color: #800000; font-size: 14pt;\"> &#8221; With things so bad in this old world, <\/span><\/em>\n<em><span style=\"color: #800000; font-size: 14pt;\"> What&#8217;s holding back my church? &#8220;<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p>A token effort won&#8217;t work with God.\u00a0 God demands change.\u00a0 When God shows up, things can&#8217;t help but change.\u00a0 When He steps into the picture everything changes.<\/p>\n<p>Someone has said, &#8220;<strong><em><span style=\"color: #339966;\">If you&#8217;re satisfied with things as they are, you don&#8217;t want God to show up.<\/span><\/em><\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If you want everything to stay the same,\u00a0 you&#8217;ll have to exclude God from everything.<\/p>\n<p>A careful read of the Bible clearly shows that everywhere God shows up in the Old Testament, every time Jesus shows up in the Gospels; every time the Holy Spirit shows up in the New Testament, things, circumstances, and people are changing!<\/p>\n<p>God is an agent of change!<\/p>\n<p>In a literal way, the Wise Men changed their course after seeing Jesus; verse 12 tells us that they &#8220;departed into their own country another way.&#8221;\u00a0 Because they had a life changing encounter with the Messiah, they gave their best (represented by the gold), and their lives were changed forever.<\/p>\n<p>Once we have an encounter with the living Jesus Christ, we can never walk the same path again.\u00a0 We can&#8217;t go back to 2015.\u00a0 It&#8217;s over, it served its purpose, it&#8217;s time to be fresh.\u00a0 Do we still try to do things we did 75 years ago?\u00a0 Do we wear the same clothes we wore 75 years ago?\u00a0 Is our hair the same way?<\/p>\n<p>Are we prepared. Are we &#8220;prayed up?&#8221;\u00a0 Are we expecting God to show up? Are we ready to be changed???<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">2:\u00a0 The Magi Brought Gold<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The Magi packed some gifts with them before starting their journey.\u00a0 They were prepared to participate in this wonder of worshiping the Messiah.\u00a0 They weren&#8217;t going to show up empty handed, take a look at the manger, and then complain that things could have been done better if they had been in charge.\u00a0 They came to worship, not to be spectators.<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-warning'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Is the modern church becoming &#8220;Spectator Oriented&#8221;?\u00a0 To encounter Christ, worship must be participatory.\u00a0 Offerings; gifts of money, gifts of time, gifts of talent open us up to the Holy Spirit.<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<p>And so, the Magi packed some expensive gifts in order to participate in this worship.\u00a0 The most notable of them is the gold.<\/p>\n<p>Gold was very valuable and was used because of its rarity, beauty, and workability.\u00a0 It can be melted without harm and is extremely manageable.\u00a0 Thus it can be used for cast objects, inlays, or overlays.\u00a0\u00a0 A number if Israel&#8217;s worship objects were solid gold or gilded.\u00a0 Gold occurs in the Bible more frequently than any other metal.<\/p>\n<p>Gold is of great worth, and when we think of gold we think of great wealth.\u00a0 We also think of royalty.\u00a0 The Scottish Theologian William Barclay has suggested that &#8220;<strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">gold, the king of metals, is the fit gift for the King of humanity.<\/span><\/em><\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>What is it that comes to mind when we think of what we can offer as our best for Jesus and His church?\u00a0 To be sure, this gold assisted Joseph economically as he took Mary, Jesus, and himself to Egypt in order to flee the murderous hand of King Herod.\u00a0 They were poor peasants; they never could have afforded this.\u00a0 God used the offering of gold to provide for the physical needs of Mary, Joseph, and Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">3: The Magi Brought Their Best<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>But there&#8217;s a second meaning here: <strong>Gold represented the best the Magi could offer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When we serve the church, are we doing our absolute best?\u00a0 Are we doing all that we can?\u00a0 Are we giving our absolute best in time, talent, and finances?\u00a0 Or, are we &#8220;spectator oriented?&#8221;\u00a0 When we\u00a0 give, there is someone on the receiving end.<\/p>\n<p>In Revelation 5:12, multitudes are praising God saying&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8220;Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, <\/span><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength <\/span><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">and honor and glory and praise!&#8221;<\/span> <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>May our gifts and efforts be worthy of Him!<\/p>\n<p>The familiar carol by John Hopkins says it so well:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8220;<strong><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Born a King on Bethlehem&#8217;s plain, gold I bring to crown Him again.<\/span><\/em><\/strong>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p>Gold is the symbol of wealth, power, and excellence.\u00a0 We still give gold medals to those who achieve great things.<\/p>\n<p>Our wealth, our material substance, represents the investment of our time and the application of our abilities.<\/p>\n<p>What we do with our &#8220;gold&#8221; here on earth is a demonstration of what is truly important to us.\u00a0 To say it differently, what we do with our &#8220;gold&#8221; reveals what we hold to be of greatest value.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">4: The Magi Brought Hunger<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The Magi followed the star until they found Jesus, AND THEN the epiphany took place:\u00a0 The Savior is manifested to a world of those who <em><strong>seek<\/strong><\/em> God, who <strong><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">hunger<\/span><\/em><\/strong> for divine truth, who <strong><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">cry out<\/span><\/em><\/strong> for a vision of the glory of the Lord.\u00a0 The epiphany of God will take place for us as individual believers and as a body of Christ ONLY IF we are willing to actively seek, follow, and give the &#8220;gold&#8221; of our time and treasures.<\/p>\n<p>During their journey, the Wise Men might have been singing &#8220;antiquity&#8217;s version&#8221; of &#8220;<strong><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Ain&#8217;t No Mountain High Enough, to Keep me from You.<\/span><\/em><\/strong>&#8221;\u00a0 They forged on, driven by their hunger to see Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">What do We Bring?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Are we willing to do what it takes so that we can see Christ?\u00a0 Beyond that, are we willing to do what it takes so that others see Christ?<\/p>\n<p>Jesus wants us to be so committed to Him that we put Him first even before our own lives.\u00a0 He doesn&#8217;t want our second best or our leftovers.\u00a0 He wants our total commitment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Alvin Straight, age 73, lived in Laurens Iowa.\u00a0 His brother, age 80, lived several hundred miles away in Blue River Wisconsin.\u00a0 According to the Associated Press, Alvin&#8217;s\u00a0 brother had suffered a stroke, and Alvin wanted to see him, but he had a transportation problem.\u00a0 He didn&#8217;t have a driver&#8217;s license because his eyesight was bad, and he apparently had an aversion to taking a plane, train or bus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But Alvin didn&#8217;t let that stop him.\u00a0 In 1994, he climbed aboard his 1966 John Deere tractor lawn mower and drove it all the way to Blue River Wisconsin to see his brother.<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<p>Are we that committed to Jesus?\u00a0 Are we that committed to the church?\u00a0 The Wise Men brought their gold and gifted Jesus with it.\u00a0 You and I have an opportunity to extend these same gifts to Jesus today and everyday.<\/p>\n<p>Can we commit 100% of our gold, time, and talents?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u00a0Quiz Time!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #000080;\">As you reflect on what you&#8217;ve just heard\/read, give this quiz a try.\u00a0 If you don&#8217;t understand an answer (or if you disagree with the &#8220;correct&#8221;
