{"id":5669,"date":"2015-01-31T10:26:14","date_gmt":"2015-01-31T14:26:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?page_id=5669"},"modified":"2020-05-21T15:28:11","modified_gmt":"2020-05-21T19:28:11","slug":"training","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?page_id=5669","title":{"rendered":"Training"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Faith Skills Training<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Our most important source of knowledge is God&#8217;s Word.\u00a0 We want to be &#8220;trained&#8221; to know Him better and to grow into His likeness.\u00a0 That&#8217;s why why have Bible Studies, prayer groups, small groups, and it&#8217;s also part of the reason why we worship on Sunday mornings.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em><span style=\"color: #333399;\">But we also need training on how to use this tool God has given us, which we call &#8220;The Church.&#8221; We need &#8220;Faith Skills&#8221; that can help us become better servants and disciples within the church.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Clergy have received intense and specialized training in the Word, Order and Sacraments.\u00a0 We look to our pastors for leadership both in guiding us and in leading the church.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em><span style=\"color: #333399;\">But Laity also benefit from training which can mold us into leaders within our local congregations and even beyond into the District and Conference of the United Methodist Church.\u00a0 This page outlines some of those opportunities&#8230;<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">District \/ Regional Day of Learning<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Every year (usually the first Saturday in March), our district (the Delaware Bay District) holds a \u201cDistrict Day of Learning.\u201d\u00a0 Recently, this &#8220;District Day of Learning&#8221; has been expanded to include two additional Districts of the Greater NJ Annual Conference.\u00a0 Conveniently enough for us, the Day of Learning is held in our church!\u00a0 Keep an eye on our website to see when the next Day of Learning will be held.<\/p>\n<div class='et-learn-more clearfix'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class='heading-more'>Click here to learn more<span class='et_learnmore_arrow'><span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='learn-more-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <strong>What Happens at a Day of Learning?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>FOOD!!! The event starts out in the Fellowship Hall with some breakfast goodies and a chance to meet some of the other folks from around our District.<\/li>\n<li>WORSHIP! We then move into the sanctuary for a short time of praise and worship.<\/li>\n<li>LEARNING. There are morning workshops (followed by lunch), and then afternoon workshops. You can register for the morning and\/or afternoon workshops. You don\u2019t have to spend the entire day.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>What Do You Learn at a Day of Learning?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>A wide variety of topics are presented by clergy and laity from around the district.\u00a0 Here are a few of the workshops presented during previous District Days of Learning:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lay Speaking (Lay Servants)<\/li>\n<li>Telling The Story- How to bring others into our church fellowship<\/li>\n<li>\u201cPartnering for Soup Kitchens\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cYou Tube and Youth\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cAre You Facebook Official?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cGetting Old is a Pain!\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Lay Servant Ministries<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Lay Servant ministry training gives lay people with skills in Care giving, Leadership, and Communication.\u00a0 Training is provided by the Conference (organized by each District) on a once a year basis.<\/p>\n<a href='http:\/\/www.gnjumc.org\/pages\/detail\/299' class='small-button smallgreen' target=\"_blank\">Lay Servant<\/a>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Stephen Ministries<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Stephen ministers are lay people trained for one on one caregiving for someone going through a difficult period.\u00a0 Our church has a corp of trained Stephen Ministers along with some who have been trained to train new ministers.<br \/>\nTo learn more about the Stephen Ministry at PUMC, <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a title=\"Stephen Ministry\" href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?page_id=179\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Click Here<\/a><\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<a href='http:\/\/www.stephenministries.org\/' class='small-button smallgreen' target=\"_blank\">Stephen Ministry<\/a>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000080;\">Online Courses<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>United Methodist Communications also offers a series of Online Courses. Some of these are for free, others involve a modest cost.\u00a0 &#8220;Be a Disciple&#8221;\u00a0 also offers a series of courses, and some of these courses can be applied to the ongoing training requirements for Advanced Lay Servants.<\/p>\n<p><a href='https:\/\/umctraining.org\/' class='small-button smallgreen' target=\"_blank\">UMC Training<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <a href='http:\/\/www.beadisciple.com\/' class='small-button smallgreen' target=\"_blank\">Be A Disciple<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0 <a href='https:\/\/www.beadisciple.com\/lay-servant-ministries\/' class='small-button smallteal' target=\"_blank\">Be a Disciple Lay Servant Courses<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-info'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">To take advantage of the many courses offered by United Methodist Communications, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/umctraining.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">visit\u00a0their\u00a0site,<\/a><\/span> select a course and register. If you haven&#8217;t done this before, you&#8217;ll have to set up an account&#8230; but don&#8217;t let that scare you off!\u00a0 It&#8217;s pretty painless.\u00a0\u00a0 Just give them your name, email address, make up a password, and skip most of the other optional information (up to you). You can come back at any time to log in with your email address and the password you made up for United Methodist\u00a0 Communications Training.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Click this button to log in to your existing account or to set a new one up for yourself:<\/span>\n<a href='https:\/\/umctraining.org\/account?action=login_form' class='icon-button rss-icon' target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">UM Communications Login<\/span><span class='et-icon'><\/span><\/a><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000080;\">Chuck Knows Church<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>One of the more interesting training resources available is a video series entitled &#8220;Chuck Knows Church&#8221;.\u00a0 These videos explain some of the symbolism and traditions we follow as tools for worship, and links to specific videos are often included in the posts on our church website.<\/p>\n<a href='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/results?search_query=chuck+knows+church\/' class='small-button smallgreen' target=\"_blank\">Chuck Knows Church<\/a>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000080;\">Walk to Emmaus<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The &#8220;Walk to Emmaus&#8221; and the partner program for youth (&#8220;Chrysalis&#8221;) is a faith based weekend retreat.\u00a0\u00a0 The purpose of the Walk (or &#8220;flight&#8221;) is to build up the laity for more effective leadership in the local church.<\/p>\n<div class='et-learn-more clearfix'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class='heading-more'>Click here to learn more<span class='et_learnmore_arrow'><span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='learn-more-content'>Traveling as a &#8220;pilgrim&#8221; or &#8220;caterpillar&#8221;is literally a once in a lifetime experience. \u00a0\u00a0 The local organization,\u00a0 Garden Stare Walk to Emmaus, holds its weekends at the South Seaville Camp.
