Pastor’s Ponderings: A Believer in Blessings

Are we really resting in the peace and security that God offers us?  Or, we running around, bearing burdens that God wants to lift from us?

Matthew  6:25-26…

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?

Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?

Psalm 55:22…

Cast your cares on the Lord
and he will sustain you;
he will never let the righteous fall.

A Believer in Blessings

There is a story that many years ago there was a Scotchman who lived in Liverpool and desired to come to America.  He gathered the small amount of money he had and decided that he would save as much as he could on food during the trip in order to have more money on hand when he reached New York.   Before the ship was going to sail the man went to a small store and bought a supply of crackers and cheese to get him through his days at sea.

But, as the voyage progressed the sea air made him very hungry.  To make matters worse, the dampness in the air made his cheese hard and his crackers soft.  He became almost desperate with hunger.  The last straw came for him when he smelled the fragrance of delicious food being carried to another passenger.  The hungry man made up his mind that he would have one good meal even though it might take most of his money. He went to the dining hall and approached a waiter asking how much it would cost to sit at a table and enjoy eating a dinner. The waiter asked the man if he had a ticket for the trip.  The man showed his ticket, and the waiter told him that all meals for the trip were included in the price of the ticket!

This poor man could have saved the money he spent on crackers and cheese, he could have avoided the hunger, he could have gone to the dining room and eaten as much as he liked every mealtime.

Cross-Lent _04637__180This story serves as a humble reminder where many people find themselves.  Because of faith in Christ they are saved, but they go on a dreary journey through life without enjoying any of the blessings God has for them in Christ!  How terrible to miss out on the joy of being a believer in Jesus Christ!  How sad to settle for “cheese and crackers” alone when God invites us to enjoy all of the blessing of being part of a Christian community and take the seat at His “banquet table” which Christ has purchased.

As we journey through these days of summer, let’s enjoy the blessings which Christ has purchased for us.
