The Pitman United Methodist Church has its roots in the Pitman Grove Camp Meeting. During the summer of 1871, a group of clergy from the New Jersey Annual Conference started the Pitman Grove Camp Meeting. They met every Sunday during the summer, but as the Camp Meeting grew, so did the number of year-round residents. In 1885, the Pitman Grove Methodist Episcopal Church was founded. There have been several name and building changes over the years, but what started in 1885 is now our Pitman United Methodist Church.
Far more important than our history is that we are rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We have a Creator who made all of us and loves all of us. And through Jesus, we have an opportunity to restore and grow in our relationship with God. Our God is eternal; the celebration of God’s love and grace which started in 1871 is the same love and grace that we celebrate today.
The Pitman Grove Camp Meeting tradition continues this summer. For the 153rd year, the Bible will be preached in the center of our town, in what is known as the Pitman Grove. During the months of July and August, Christians of several denominations will gather in the Grove on Sunday evenings. Through Music and Word, we will celebrate our God and listen for what He wants to tell us in our lives today.
