Single Service & Lunch Celebrate our Anniversary! (10/30/16)

Sunday October 30 has two things about it that are special to PUMC: THING 1 THING 2 Back in November of 1885,  the PITMAN GROVE METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH was organized.  From that small beginning of 43 members, we have grown into what is now the “Pitman United Methodist Church.” It’s our birthday and we are now 131 years old! It’s the 5th Sunday of the month!   So,coupled with something that’s true of us every day (we love to eat!), we’re all going to...

PUMC Raising Fun(ds) at the Glassboro Friendlys! (Thursday 10/20/15)

PUMC has developed a tradition of eating at Friendlys to help raise funds for our missions.  Helping  feed others by eating out?!?  Yep!  The restaurant donates a portion of everyone’s bill to our church (if you present a voucher when ordering). And PUMC people love to eat!  Starting with our first “Fun Raiser” back  in June of 2015, we have taken advantage of Friendly’s “Fun Raiser” program by packing the Glassboro Friendlys on the Third Thursday of each...

Our Fathers House Graduation (5/26/16)

May and June is a special time in the lives of proud parents; Graduations!  Junior High School, High School, College, University… Master’s Degrees and even Doctorate Degrees!  All important times for students and their parents. But what about Pre-K???  Competing those first years of school is quite an accomplishment; both for the kids AND for the parents! On the morning of Tuesday May 26 we celebrated this accomplishment and made some lifelong memories as our 2016 four-year olds...

PUMC Scrambles to Organize Easter Egg Hunt! (3/26/16)

Easter eggs… Really? Eggs represent life, and new life comes from the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.  So we’re going to use the symbol of Easter Eggs to help teach our children about the true meaning of Easter… and to have a little fun while we’re at it! On Holy Saturday, March 26, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, we will host our 8th annual Easter Egg Hunt.  There will be lunch, a “special presentation,” and (of course) plenty of Easter eggs.  Last year’s Egg...

PUMC Celebrates Ministries with Luncheon (1/31/16)

Just  a quick glance through our church newsletter (Steeple Notes), or through the “Coming Events” section of our bulletin,  or at the Monthly Calendar (see the link on the website sidebar), reveals that this church is “busy.”  But being “busy” and “doing things” doesn’t necessarily mean we’re “doing things” that glorify God. But when the Holy Spirit leads us into these activities, we are then participating in the...

PUMC Celebrates 130th Anniversary with a Special Sunday (11/1/15)

On November 10 1885, the “Pitman Grove Methodist Episcopal Church” was “organized”,  and what we now know as the “Pitman United Methodist Church“- was born.  Our church is now 130 years old! On November 1 2015 we celebrated!  Our usual 9:30 and 11:00 services merged into a single 10:15 service of worship, and we all got together in the Fellowship Hall afterwards for a covered dish luncheon. It was a homecoming of sorts, and Pastor Jim’s sermon was...

PUMC Packs Friendly’s! (9/17/15)

For each month since June 2015, we have been taking advantage of the Glassboro Friendly’s “Fun Raiser” program to raise funds for our missions projects.  The turnouts on these nights has been fantastic!  Our church has packed the restaurant (jump starting their business on those nights), Friendlys has Packed us with some good food, AND- we’ve even been able to raise some funds which will help our church feed the hungry and house those still trying to recover from...

PUMC Canoes and Kayaks at Parvin State Park! (8/1/15)

On a beautiful Summer morning, you need to spend some quality time with family, friends (and “church family”)… and, it’s an extra bonus  if you can enjoy some of the great outdoors and taste  some of God’s creation at the same time! That’s what a group of us did on Saturday 8/1/15.  About 15 of us (all ages) traveled to Parvin State Park, rented canoes or kayaks, and spent some time on the lake (yes- none of our boaters spent any time IN the lake!).  We got...

PUMC to Return to Friendlys! (7/21/15 & 8/18/15)

During the Summer you need Ice Cream! You need to go to the shore and do other things to take advantage of the opportunity to mix thing up.  One of the highlights during the Fall and Winter is our Tuesday evenings of dinner, fellowship, and Bible Study.  But one of this summer’s highlights is shaping up to be our evenings at Friendlys! Last month, we held our first Fundraiser at Friendlys.  PUMC packed the restaurant and we raised over $250 for our shared ministries.  People across the...

Youth Lead the Way!!!

Sometimes adults think of youth as “so and so’s son or daughter” or of a demographic that we somehow need to attract and create programs for. But the people we call “Youth” are a dynamic part of our church. Recently we have seen three examples of their leadership and how they have contributed to our church and its mission.  The list could go way beyond these three items, but here’s a taste of the contributions that they are always making…   1: ...

PUMC to Go to Phillies Game (7/19/15)

Remember that big storm we had a few weeks ago?  The one that hit us during Vacation Bible School?  The one that left many of us without power for several days? Well, one thing that also happened that week is that our annual trip to the Phillies got rained out!  We were supposed to go on June 27, but well- most of us were busy with other things anyway. But now we’ve got a second chance!  The game has been rescheduled to Sunday July 19 at 1:35 PM.  The church van will leave from the...

Our families and friends have enjoyed them for years, and they are the highlights of many a covered dish supper or family gathering. The cookbook will be available for a donation, and the proceeds will go towards the payment of our shared ministries obligation. The cookbooks can be obtained from Maureen Kier or  Marshall Genter.  ...

Hooks ‘n Needles Serves up Hugs ‘n Prayers During Sunday Worship (5/10/15)

On Sunday May 10, the Hooks and Needles for God group filled the altar rail with a colorful and soft array of blankets.  Hooks and Needles makes these blankets to be given to people in times of special need; illness, births, or just when someone needs to know that the church is surrounding them in prayer. During the service, members gathered around the altar rail to pray over these blankets.  The people receiving these blankets is not yet known (by us anyway…), but the prayers were made...

Our Fathers House & Elderberries Sing and Feast! (11/19/14)

On the morning of November 19 2024, the children from Our Father’s House presented a musical program in the sanctuary; the kids were “Marching in the Lord’s Army” and “Making Us Fishers of Men.”  The energy the kids presented while singing this whole series of short “Sunday School” songs was inspiring and entertaining. The sanctuary was filled with not only camera toting parents, but also with seniors from our church.  This event bridged young...

PUMC Marks its 129th Anniversary! (11/10/14)

Our church has a long history, beginning with a Sunday School class that started in November of 1877.  This class grew out of the summer Camp Meetings which were held in the Pitman Grove. But the “official start” of the “Pitman Grove Methodist Episcopal Church” came 15 years after this initial class was formed.    Here’s an excerpt from the booklet “Our Heritage” which was written 1n 1985 in commemoration of our centennial… On November 10, 1885,...

Remembering Hazel Stiles and the “Stand at the Door” Window

As we enter a time of transition from one pastor to the next, we pause to reflect on the history of our church and on the heritage that God has supplied us with. In the chapel there is a stained glass window showing Jesus standing at the door and knocking.  The window depicts Revelation 3:20 where Jesus tells the church in Laodicea, “Here I am!  I stand at the door and knock.  If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.” This window...
