The Pitman Food Pantry Steps Up to Serve (5/14/16)

“How does God’s love abide in anyone who has worldly goods, sees a brother or sister in need, and yet refuses to help?” I John 3:17 What is the Pitman Food Pantry? For fourteen years, the Pitman Pantry, an ecumenical ministry of five local churches, has provided groceries to those in need. Located at the First Baptist Church, the Pitman Pantry serves 50-70 families each week. The majority of these folks live in Pitman, but no one is ever turned away. Each of the five...

Pantry Keeps Feeding Pitman!

As we enter this season of Thanksgiving, most of us will be enjoying dinner tables filled with more food than we can (or should) eat.  If  Thursday the 27th finds you gazing over piles of mashed potatoes, turkey, stuffing, and pumpkin pie, remember that many in our community aren’t able to do that. God has blessed us, so that we can bless others.  And… God has blessed others so that we can be blessed.   God Answers Prayer Through His People… How can a loving God allow...

UMW collecting Cereal for Pitman Food Pantry (8/17/14)

Help Feed Pitman’s Poor! The Pitman food pantry is always in need of food donations, especially during the summer.  To help highlight this, our United Methodist Women’s group has been organizing a monthly drive for donations.  Donations are requested to be placed in the pantry shopping cart (located in the Fellowship Hall). This month we’re highlighting Cereal and Jelly.  Donations can be made at any time, but the monthly UMW donation has been set for Sunday August 17.  ...

Pitman Food Pantry

PITMAN FOOD PANTRY The Pitman Pantry, located in rear of the First Pitman Baptist Church, continues as an ecumenical ministry of five local churches to provide food to needy families. Food is delivered to the elderly or handicapped as needed. Volunteer workers, and donations of food and money help the Pitman Pantry satisfy the requests for food. The Pantry continues to receive food from the USDA; and the Food Bank of South Jersey, which keeps our costs down; but food available from them varies...

Churches Fill the Gaps during Summer Vacation! (6/20/18- )

It’s Summer! The kids are out of school… and school lunches have stopped for the summer.
The churches of Pitman are helping to fill the gap by distributing lunch boxes to children throughout the summer. We are also offering hygiene products that aren’t covered by food stamps.

PUMC Participates in Pitman Volunteer Fair (1/27/18)

One of the traditional ways of celebrating Martin Luther King Day is to give yourself in service to the community.  Our own community of Pitman and our own community of Pitman United Methodist Church cannot be the community of love and support that it is without “volunteers”; people giving of themselves for the better good.   This year (on January 27, 2018) our town held a “Volunteer Fair” in our Borough Hall.  A wide variety of  organizations participated by telling...

Practicing Extravagant Generosity (10/15 thru 11/11 2017)

Unity.  Pulling together to be of one heart and one purpose.  In our church, that purpose is to glorify our Creator-God and to help Him build His Kingdom.  Our goal is to become more like Christ in every facet of our lives. One of the attributes of God is that He is generous… REALLY generous.  Imagine the Son of God somehow squeezing Himself into a human body, living on this earth, and then dying on a Roman cross?  Think about the God who has provided all of your needs throughout your...

BLAST to Fight Hunger by Washing Cars (5/20/17)

It’s called the “30 Hour Famine.”  Our Youth Group (Big Loud Awesome Spiritual Time) participates in it every year, but this goes beyond a simple fast.  In addition to taking some time for spiritual reflection, we’re also going to make a difference for people who have no choice between eating and not eating.  And as part of that reflection, we’re also going to improve the reflection of the cars in our community! On Saturday May 20 (between the hours of 1:00...

Brady Can in Superbowl. PUMC Souper in Cans! (2/5/17)

It was a record setting Sunday… or at least different in many ways.  In the morning, PUMC’ers dressed down in their favorite team jersey garb.  Some of us even wore our new PUMC sweatshirts.  Pastor Jim wore his favorite Jerry Rice 49’ers jersey. In his sermon (and throughout the service), Pastor Jim turned the popularity of the super bowl into a series of object lessons about how we can be part of God’s Team… of how we can join up with God for a certain victory. ...

PUMC Set to Collect Cans of Soup on Super Bowl Sunday (2/5/17)

Even if you don’t live in Atlanta or Foxboro, Sunday February 5 is going to be a big (“Super”) day.  Even if you’re not a football fan, a lot of good things (er- “super” things) are happening on this day.  Here’s the count down: 1:   We’ll hold two worship services (9:30 and 11:00… the “normal schedule”).  2:   We’ll observe our annual “Dress Down Sunday”  Wear your favorite sports jersey. 3:   There...

“PokeMon Go” Stops by PUMC!

Our church signboard has been chosen as a “PokeStop”! If you’re used to playing the video game “Pokemon Go”, you know what that means. If this is total gibberish to you, we’ll give a quick intro to Pokemon.
Either way, all of us need to keep returning to The Vine for strength.

Preschool Has a Cow… and then Some! (5/1/16)

Our preschool,Our Father’s House, teaches more than “Readin’, Writing, and ‘Rithmatic.”    We also teach how to grow in the grace and love of God. Every month, we have taken on a different mission project.  In April,  we collected and donated $500 to Heifer International.   What is Heifer International? Heifer International’s mission is to work with communities to end hunger and poverty and care for the Earth. They help poor and hungry people help...

30 Hour Famine: Youth to Save Starving Kids by Fasting! (5/6/16 – 5/7/16)

Youth- sometimes our Youth Group (BLAST- Big Loud Awesome Spiritual Time) occupies themselves by spreading gop and goo.  Sometimes they go on roller coasters or climb rocks.  But sometimes they have a blast with a fast.  A BLAST… by not eating???  Teenagers??? Yep!  BLAST also has a blast by helping others.  Last year we served breakfast at a homeless shelter, raised over a ton (literally) of food for the Pitman Food Pantry, and participated in many other ministries to help us learn more...

Men’s Fellowship Retreats and Grows into Leadership (3/11/16)

Sometimes it’s really helpful to shift your focus from the daily routine, and get away to spend some time with friends around a time of learning, worship, and fellowship.  And that’s exactly what a retreat is!  For the 15th year in a row, our Men’s Fellowship group took a weekend apart and traveled to the Black Rock Retreat Center in Quaryville, PA.  It’s a familiar place for us, but each weekend has its own character and its own take-aways of growth and learning. This...

Playing on God’s Super Team (2/7/16)

Super Bowl Sunday!  The day of the Big Game!  In a few hours the Denver Broncos would battle the Carolina Panthers; each team trying to reach the endzone and to win the Super Bowl prize.  Both teams taking their turns making mistakes (fumbles and turnovers).  During our worship service we observed this “special day” by dressing down and wearing our favorite team jerseys.  Our goal wasn’t to worship Sports; our goal was to learn whatever spiritual lessons we could from this...

PUMC Celebrates Ministries with Luncheon (1/31/16)

Just  a quick glance through our church newsletter (Steeple Notes), or through the “Coming Events” section of our bulletin,  or at the Monthly Calendar (see the link on the website sidebar), reveals that this church is “busy.”  But being “busy” and “doing things” doesn’t necessarily mean we’re “doing things” that glorify God. But when the Holy Spirit leads us into these activities, we are then participating in the...

3rd and 4th Graders Learn to Be Jesus’ Hands and Feet (1/17/16)

The Third and Fourth graders in our Sunday School are practicing to be the “Hands” and “Feet” of Jesus by making a chain recording their good deeds. We’re hoping that by the end of the year, our chain will reach around the room!   Standing in the Gap As we saw in a recent sermon, Ezekiel 22:30-31 uses the image of someone “Standing in the Gap” between God’s love and humanity’s sinfulness.  God is calling us to be “priests”;...
