Neighborhood Center

The Neighborhood Center, Inc. at 278 Kaighns Avenue in Camden is an urban outreach mission of the Greater New Jersey Conference United Methodist Churches, and part of the Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church.

The work began in November 1913 when the Women’s Home Ministry Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church recognized great needs among the people of South Camden that were unmet by the organized church.  The work continued for eight years at 271 Kaighns Avenue under the direction of a Deaconess.  In 1921, the Kaighns Mansion at 278 was purchased and became the center of operation until its demolition in 1925.  The present building erected on that site, was called “The Deaconess Home.”  It has been in continuous use since 1925.  A building on adjoining ground (acquired in 1958) was renovated and dedicated in 1964 as a “Craft Building” and is being used at present by our Day Care and Bright Beginnings Preschool Programs.

Through the years, there have been many changes in the name of the Center.  In 1954 it became the New Jersey Conference Deaconess Home and Community Center Inc., shortened in 1966 to Methodist Deaconess Community Center, Southern New Jersey Conference.  In 1968, it acquired the present name – Neighborhood Center, Inc.
