What is Africa University? What is Shared Ministry?

Wouldn’t it be great if we could train up a team of experts who could help people all over Africa to provide sources of  clean water, build churches, build schools, and divert young people away from an impoverished destiny by giving them a college education?

As it turns out, the United Methodist Church is doing these things day in and day out.  One of the “causes” supported by our Shared Ministries is the Africa University.  Instead of sending Americans to Africa, African graduates from this university are making a huge difference in the lives of ordinary people.

Jesus called us to care for those in need…

For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,   I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’   Matt 25:35-36

We can’t do those things very well all by ourselves.  We may not even be able to travel from Pitman to Africa, but through the Shared Ministry of the United Methodist Church, we can make a difference.

Africa University is more than a line on the Shared Ministries budget.  The UMC website recently posted a two part report about Africa University and its graduates who are helping people (on our behalf).  Check it Out:

After reading the articles above (and looking at the slideshows of pictures), try the following quiz…

All of this happens,  in part, because of our Shared Giving through the United Methodist Church.

Shared Giving…

We use the connection of the United Methodist Church to help people in ways we could never do by ourselves.  The below video was produced by the North Georgia Annual Conference to explain it’s Shared Ministry (“Apportioned Giving”).  The specifics may be in Georgia, but the concept is true here in Greater New Jersey…
