Youth Group Has Virtual Meetings with Real Friends (4/26/20)

It’s April of 2020, and the wave of the Covid-19 virus has taken over our lives.  In the midst of this pandemic, our building is closed, we’re “hunkering down” in our homes, and we’re practicing “social distancing” when we do venture outside.  For many, that could mean that we loose contact with friends  and miss out on the support they offer.

The writer to Hebrews reminded us that Christians weren’t built to do things on their own:

Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another — and all the more as you see the Day approaching. NIV

Hebrews 10:25

We all need each other, and that  goes for the Youth too.

PUMC Youth Group

In normal times, we meet in the church on Sunday nights.  We open our Bibles and our hearts.  We pray together, study together, encourage one another.

Back when things were still “normal,” we were playing games, eating refreshments, and studying the Bible together.

But in this “new reality” of “Social Distancing”, the church is closed.

We can’t get together anymore…. or can we???

Virtual Friends are Still Real!

We don’t want to “give up meeting together,” so we’re using technology and “meeting  together” in a different way.

Since the shutdown we’ve taken to the Internet and have been meeting together using Zoom.  We’ve been playing virtual games using Jackbox.tv.  We might all have to stay at home, but we’re still supporting each other.  We just wrapped up a study on Prayer, and now we’ve moved into a study of the book of Hebrews (in addition to all of the fun games).

It’s not the same as  being together in person, but it’s something to look forward to each week.  Even though our friends show up as “Brady Bunch” squares on a computer screen,  they are still friends.  We still listen to each other, pray for each other, and encourage each other.  Isn’t that what real friends do anyway?

Open Arms

Another thing that real friends do is to welcome anyone to the group.  The  “virtual room” we’re using is really big!  You don’t have to arrive early to get the best couch (or beanbag chair!).   All youth are invited into our “virtual meeting” and fellowship of real friends.
