Sunday May 19 will be a special service in which we celebrate the contributions of Native Americans to our society.  PUMC Lay Speaker Steve Ozkowski (who has roots in the Mohawk Tribal Nation) will deliver the sermon in both services.

Steve will speak on the Emmaus story, found in Luke 24.  The title of his message will be: “The End of the Trail, Or Is It?”

Steve also spoke last year, and during his message he shared some items from his heritage…

Native American Ministries

Native American Ministries are important to all of us. For centuries Native Americans have shared their love of God’s creation, their respect for all people, and their desire to live peacefully. In 1988 to honor that rich heritage, the United Methodist General Conference chose to designate an annual special Sunday to focus on Native American Ministries and to remind us of the gifts and contributions of Native Americans. There are more than 500 Native American Tribal Nations in the United States. Each tribe has a unique heritage in danger of being lost if we don’t help protect and preserve Native American arts, language, customs, and spirituality.

There are no conditions to being a child of God. Celebrating Native American Ministries is our opportunity to affirm some of God’s children. The United Methodist Church feels strongly that contributions made by Native Americans to our church should be cherished, and that all United Methodists should support and promote this important ministry. United Methodist Shared Ministry funds provide scholarships for Native American UM seminarians, plant Native American UM churches, and cultivate outreach programs to initiate and sustain ministries in Native American communities throughout the United States. Locally, St. Johns Fordville in
Bridgeton is a Native American United Methodist Church.

Native American Ministries Sunday

This is also a special Sunday where we can give to support Ministries that bring Jesus Christ into these communities while respecting and promoting the Native American cultures.  Here’s a video from the UMC website…
