Local Methodists in Concert for Puerto Rico (5/12/18)

Posted by on May 16, 2018 in EventReport, Mission: Global | 0 comments

On 5/12/18, area churches teamed up together to hold a dinner and Praise Band concert in our church.  The purpose was to raise funds (and awareness) for a mission trip to Puerto Rico which members of the First United Methodist Church of Glassboro will take during the summer of 2018.  In the Fall of 2017, the island was devastated by two hurricanes.  During their upcoming trip, the team from Glassboro plans to clean up debris, repair homes, and to just simply be present with the love of Christ.

Traveling is expensive.  Traveling to build and repair is even more expensive, since the team needs to provide many of the supplies.  The dinner, auction, and concert at PUMC raised over $5000 for this trip!  Indirectly, by hosting this concert and by continuing to support the Glassboro mission team, we are helping the people of Puerto Rico to recover from the 2017 hurricanes…

Puerto Rico’s Need…

On September 7, 2017 Hurricane Irma slammed into the Caribbean and made its way through Florida and up the East coast of the US.  Then, two weeks later Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico with a direct blow.   The double whammy left this US territory with major flooding (30 inches in some areas!) and massive power outages (over 1 million people without electricity).

Over eight months have passed, but the effects are still debilitating.  Many are still without water and electricity.  The rubbled remains of business and homes remain covered by blue tarps.  Jobs remain scare.

In the immediate aftermath, the United Methodist Church (through UMCOR- “United Methodist Committee on Relief”) was on the scene.  They’ve been providing the people with essential supplies, health clinics, and counseling.  The heart and hands of the United Methodist Church continues to be with the people of Puerto Rico.

Meeting the Need…

Much remains to be done.  In New Jersey, we remember the sting of Superstorm Sandy.  It’s been five years, but people are still homeless.  Through our “Future with Hope” program, we’ve been able to rebuild hundreds of homes… and the effort continues.

And eight months later, we are still helping the people of Puerto Rico recover from the two hurricanes.  Check out this article from the United Methodist Church website: Helping Puerto Rico Rise.    Last October (one month after the storms), our Youth Group led an effort in PUMC to assemble and deliver Flood Buckets for Puerto Rico.

First UMC Glassboro Answers the Call to “Do Something”…

Moved by the tragedy of our follow Americans, many UM churches have directly jumped into jumped into action.

A team from the First United Methodist Church of Glassboro will leave South Jersey on 7/7/18 and spend a week in Puerto Rico offering  assistance, comfort, and hope to the people affected by these storms.  To prepare for this trip, the Glassboro Team is praying, overcoming fears, gathering supplies, and… raising funds.

The event held at our church helped them with those efforts.

Praise Band Dinner and Concert

On Saturday 5/12/18, Glassboro UMC threw a party at our church.  It started with a dinner featuring foods with a Puerto Rican flair (and spice)!

We then moved into the Sanctuary and gathered together in Praise and Worship through the gift of music…

Music teams from four different churches took turns on the chancel to lead us in three songs each.  Between each set, videos were shown highlighting the needs in Puerto Rico and and the provision and strength that God will provide to the mission team.  During the freewill offering, Glassboro’s Emma Rentzel lead a stirring rendition of the song “Fear, He is a Liar.”  God will win!

Below (“in order of appearance”) is rundown of the songs offered by each of these five bands.  Click the button to learn more about each church…

Do Something!

Mission begins with a passion to help someone.  It continues into action, but it dies unless we move on and spring into action.  Glassboro’s Magnify inspired the congregation to act, when they closed the concert with their rendition of “Do Something!”

On July 7, members of the First UMC of Glassboro will begin their trip to Puerto Rico.  Nerves and butterflies will gather as the date approaches.  Travel will be difficult.  The weather may be hot and humid.  Muscles may ache.  And when they leave, much work will remain undone.  But, someone from Puerto Rico will be touched.  Someone’s life will be made better because this group “Did Something.”

On 6/12/18, Glassboro UMC is calling for a Day of Prayer.  Pray for the mission team and for the people of Puerto Rico.  Pray at FUMC-Glassboro, or at your home, work, or church for the 14 team members. Pray for their travel and safety, for UMCOR’s work, for volunteers in Mission, and for the Methodist Church of Puerto Rico.

When this post was published, a video of the concert was in our Live Stream archive.  There’s no guarantee that it will always be there, but you might be able to watch the concert on our Live Stream page.
