Area Worship Teams Join in Concert for La Palmilla (3/11/18)

LaPalmilla worshipers in the still uncompleted sanctuary.

For 19 years, a United Methodist church in La Palmilla, Mexico has been bursting at the seams and has been in need of a new sanctuary.  Unfortunately, they lack the funds needed to hire contractors to do the construction, so they’ve been doing it themselves!  And so, for many years our church (and others) has contributed to this effort by sending money and by sending mission teams.

The sanctuary is nearly completed!  But, there is still some work left to be done: the balcony, choir loft, and other areas remain unfinished.

This was the fourth year that we have hosted this Praise Band Concert. During the concert, a love offering was taken, and over $2000 was raised to help our brothers and sisters in La Palmilla Mexico. God is at work!

To help them cross the “finish line”,  four local churches joined with PUMC to produce an evening of Praise and Worship in our sanctuary.  Worship teams from Richwood UMC, Washington Baptist, Trinity UMC, and First Glassboro UMC loaded up their guitars, keyboards, and amps and brought them to our sanctuary, and each team sang three songs.  The congregation was 150 strong, and everyone left inspired by the music and fellowship.

In Concert…

The evening began with PUMC’s rendition of the song “Come Now is the Time to Worship,” and then the local team went into its set of songs:

  • Everlasting God
  • I God Saved
  • Broken Vessels (Amazing Grace)

After the other bands had sung, Pitman’s Chris Valianti sang his rendition of the Ray Bolts song “Shepherd Boy” (while Jennifer Andrade interpreted using sign language).

In between, there was a lot of great Praise & Worship music!  Below are some pictures of each of the five bands.  Click the button under each slider to learn more about the church…

Future Fellowship

These Praise Band concerts have been a great way to gather us together as Christians, and also to support worthy missions.  Stay tuned… this won’t be the last time we join in Concert…

Announcement Post

As this post is written, we are in the season of Lent.  In the Christian calendar, Lent is the 40 days (not counting Sundays) leading into Easter Sunday.  But beyond that, Lent is a package of opportunities that gives us tools to reflect on where we are in in our lives.  It’s a time to reconnect with ourselves, with our Christian friends, and with God…

Connect Through Writings…

This year (2018), as in recent years, several local churches have pulled together to create a Lenten Devotional booklet.  Each day during the 7 weeks of Lent, this booklet presents articles helping us to re-evaluate our connection with Christ.

Through these articles, our friends challenge us and remind us.  Each article in the Lenten Devotional booklet invites us into an experience of a person much like ourselves:  a person living out his or her life walking with the Lord while struggling with all of the pressures and doubts, and joys and hopes that the Christian life brings.

As we allow the Holy Spirit to connect us with Christ, we lean on our connection with other Christians to help us grow.

Connect Through Music…

Connecting with our roots as the church that grew out of the Pitman Camp Meeting,  we have always sought to participate in worship with other churches.  We reach out to Methodists in other towns, or we reach out to other churches in our town.  Regardless of denomination or location, Christians need each other and we strengthen our faith when we share our experiences.  And so it has become part of our fabric to join with other churches for times of worship, and times of music.  Throughout the years, we’ve developed shared experiences of “Choir Fests” and “Praise Team Concerts.”  We share the same Lord, and the draw of music is a universal language.

Connect Through Service…

For many years, our church has supported (and partnered) with a Methodist church in La Palmilla Mexico.  We’ve sent them money through a range of “fund raisers.”  And we’ve sent ourselves, in a series of Mission Trips.  This church doesn’t have many financial resources, but their sanctuary was bursting at the seems and their ministry needed a new place of worship.

Although most of the work on this sanctuary is completed, there is still much to do.  So we continue our efforts to help them in their ministry.

La Palmilla:  More Work to Do…

In addition to the worship and fellowship that these events always bring, part of the reason for this Concert is to help the United Methodist Church in La Palmilla Mexico.

A “love offering” will be available to benefit the continued construction of the new sanctuary of the Príncipe de Paz Methodist Church of La Palmilla, Veracruz, México. The sanctuary is 19 years in the making! With our help, the congregation is getting close to their goal of seeing it completed.

Last summer, we rolled up our sleeves and joined a Missions Team that traveled to La Palmilla to help with the construction work.  During that trip, the new sanctuary was actually dedicated!  After 19 years, the construction had advanced to the point where this dynamic church could finally use their new sanctuary for worship.

However, work remains to be done.  When our team left last summer, the balcony was not finished and pews were not installed.  And, shortly after our trip, a hurricane ripped through the area and destroyed part of the roof.

Our friends in La Palmilla still need us to stand by them.
