PUMC Throws a Trunk or Treat Party for Pitman! (10/28/17)

Halloween?!? It’s a holiday that doesn’t have the same inspirational significance of Easter, or Christmas, but it is a celebration of family. It’s a chance for families to get out together and to meet their neighbors. Sometimes, the only time you connect with your neighbors is on that chilly October night when you take your kids door to door to collect treats… and to say “hello” and “I remember when ___ was a baby!”… “How he’s grown!”… “Has it been that long?”…

Trivial things; costumes, candy and saying “hello.” But it is a time where memories can be created and relationships can be strengthened.

But sending your kids out into the streets in the dark does introduce an element of danger. And so, for 7 years PUMC has provided families with the opportunity to enjoy Halloween in a safe and fun environment.

One the evening of Saturday 10/28/17, somewhere around 250-275 kids brought their parents to PUMC to browse through the decorated trunks in our parking lot, collect candy, bounce on the outdoor slide, and enjoy some indoor games. Around 800 of our neighbors came over and enjoyed the festivities.

There was actually a contest running behind the scenes; the parents got to vote for their favorite trunk. The owners of 14 cars decorated their trunks and shared their creations this year. The winner? A trunk decorated with scenes from the Wizard of Oz! Also drawing praise were trunks decorated with themes such as Harry Potter (2nd place), and DC/Marvel super heroes (3rd place).

In the Daylight Hours…

Preparation for our Trunk or Treat begins weeks before Halloween. PUMC’ers donate bags and bags of candy, plan games, and design crazy decorations for their trunks. Many of our members volunteer to direct traffic, operate indoor games, and to serve food and drinks. Anything to welcome our neighbors.

In the daylight hours, people park their cars, set up their decorated trunks, and then wander around to meet with others who are doing the same thing. During the daylight, you can take some pictures of some strangely dressed people…

At Twilight Time…

But when it gets dark, the pictures take on a strange twilight glow. But that’s when the fun begins. Our parking lot was full of candy… lions, tiger and bears… monkeys, rainbows.. and maybe even Toto too! This year’s 14 car owners stretched their imaginations and put together a display of artistic creations.

TV shows, movies, Biblical characters and even robots abounded. Ntendo’s Mario was even there!

And in the field next to the church was a bouncy room. All kinds of stuff to entertain the kids (and their children too!). Here are some tastes of what was going on in our parking lot…

Step Inside for More!

It can be kinda hard to hobnob with the neighbors when it’s dark outside. So, we also opened up our Fellowship Hall and set up some games… and some food. Cute and clever costumes abounded.

Here’s a taste of the fun ‘n games that were being enjoyed in the Fellowship Hall…

Announcement

Sometimes, our parking lot is actually empty.  Doesn’t happen much, but if you come to PUMC in the middle of the night you might find the lot to be empty.  This  picture was taken years ago when the building first opened; it might be the only daytime photo in existence that shows an empty parking lot…

But on the evening of Saturday October 28 (2017), the place will be buzzing with activity!  Candy, music, lights, and open trunks decorated with all sorts of stuff.  No ghosts and goblins in our version of “Trunk or Treat”, but lots of creativity (and some humor too)…

There will be a lot of people wandering around enjoying the sights…

And maybe even a few strange characters…

There will be fun and games and lots of food…

AND… YOU are Invited!!!

Saturday 10/28/17

This year’s Trunk or Treat will be held on Saturday 10/28/17 from 6:30 until 8:30 PM.  Just drop in and stay how ever long you want.  The decorated cars will be in the parking lot, and there will be plenty of games in the Fellowship Hall.
