Fall 2016 Small Groups are Set to Kick Off!

Posted by on Sep 9, 2016 in Bible Study, EventAnnouncement, Worship & Prayer | 0 comments

Over the years, Pitman United Methodist Church has offered to its congregation small groups that based their existence on building relationships with one another and with God. Some groups lasted several years, and some ended after their courses of study were completed.

Small groups are part of God’s plan for spiritual maturity!

Two are better than one…. If they fall, one will lift up the other…

Ecclesiastes 4: 9-12

For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.”

Matthew 18:20

The book of Acts shows a shift from the pattern of traditional Jewish worship to the development of “house churches” based on communal sharing and fellowship.

Building on God’s Development Plan…

This fall, we are offering an opportunity for everyone, no matter where you are on your spiritual journey, to deepen your commitment to Christ and our church.

Our Fall 2016 session of Small Groups is about to begin.  We’re planning a series of three “sessions” of Small Group classes, and each session will last for 6 weeks.  Here’s the schedule:

  • Fall Session:       October 3 through November 7

  • Spring Session:  April 17 through May 22

In this Bible study we will begin by studying Tabitha to see how she helped the poor with her work.  We will also share how knitters and crocheters involved in prayer shawl ministries have helped people who are hurting all over the world.

If you would like help learning or relearning how to knit or crochet, we will help you.  You could also just come for the study!

Holiday Crafts- Bringing Christ into the Holidays

Bible Study- The book of James

  • When:    Wednesdays, 7:00-8:00 PM.  Starts October 5.
  • Leader:  Ron Brown
  • Where:  Church (Library- 2nd floor)

“Miraculous!” . . . “Revolutionary!” . . . We are inundated by a flood of extravagant claims as we channel-surf the television or flip magazine pages.  And all too often, the products do not live up to the promises.  Christians often make great hollow claims as well:  “Jesus is the answer!” . . . “He can change your life!”

While their boasts are true, sometimes Christians contradict the Gospel with their lives.  With energetic style and crisp, well-chosen words, James confronts this conflict head-on.  He, in essence, has created a how-to book on Christian living.

Singing Through Scripture

  • When:   Thursdays 7:00 PM – “finish”.  Starts September 22.
  • Leader:  Sue Crispin

Our choirs provide the opportunity to be a part of a musical “small group.”  This fall, as we begin our  Voices in Praise rehearsals, we will open with a brief devotion/study on the scripture/topic for the upcoming Sunday worship service, kind of prepping for the main event.  Come and be a part of our musical study, and music family as we open up The Word, and open up our songbooks!

Rehearsals begin on Thursday, September 22.  Our Junior Choir, (grades 2-6) rehearses in the Music Room from 6-6:30 P.M. on Thursday evenings.  Our Voices in Praise (high school-??) rehearses in the loft.  Our small group devotion time will be at 7:00 P.M., with rehearsals starting at 7:15 P.M. Come and join our musical family!

To “Sign Up”…

This isn’t a college where you’ve got to “enroll” in order to attend.  However, we do need to know how many books to order, so “signing up” would help us out.

“Small Group Registration Cards” are available in the Narthex.  No big deal; just indicate the course you’re interested in and give us your name / contact information.

If you have any questions, contact  the office, or Carol Fox or Kristen Russell.
