One Great Hour of Sharing Funds UMCOR (3/30/14)

You’ve probably heard of UMCOR.  When terrible things happen in the world like floods and UMCORlogoearthquakes, the United Methodist Committee on Relief moves in.  UMCOR is the arm of our church that reaches out to people in distress.  And, it’s fully funded by the United Methodist Church.  Any donations we give towards a particular UMCOR project go directly to that project.  100%.  There are no overhead costs.

So how are the costs “of doing business” covered?  When a disaster hits, how can UMCOR use ALL of its donations for relief and send it directly to those in need without paying anything for things like office supplies?

The answer is this thing called “One Great Hour of Sharing.”  Once a year (this year it’s on March 30), a special offering is taken to fund UMCOR.  Without these funds, they wouldn’t be able to dedicate 100% of project donations toward disaster relief.

Disasters will strike at some time within the next year.  And when they do, we’ll hear about UMCOR and how “every penny we donate will provide relief to the people in ___”.  In order for that to happen, we need to support One Great Hour of Sharing.   Mark the date and prayerfully consider how you can help to keep this ministry effective.
