Thank You from the Gideons! (3/30/14)

Last month, Wayne Murphy, a representative from the Gideons visited our church and shared about his ministry in providing Bibles.  Because of our support for them, they will be able to deliver 27 Bibles (or 107 Testaments)  to a world hungry for God’s Word.     To learn more about the Gideons, check out their website. Think of the Gideons the next time  you’re in a hotel room… So how did this group get started putting Bibles in hotel rooms…. and why are they...

Oh My God- What a Great Rate!

Posted by on Mar 11, 2014 in Godprints, Signboard | 0 comments

I recently received an ad about mortgages.  The glossy letter was topped by the words, “OMG- What a great rate!”  (For the “cell phone challenged” among us, “OMG” is a commonly used texting abbreviation meaning “Oh My God!”) Really?  Invoking the Name of our Creator over an interest rate?  Yes, God cares about every detail about our lives.   But the casual use of the expression “Oh My God!” can’t help but bring the following...

UMM Gathering with Don Polk (3/8/14)

Get Out of the Doldrums! The United Methodist Men held our monthly gathering on Saturday March 8, and we were inspired by our guest speaker, Rev. Don Polk.  Rev. Polk is the senior pastor at the Aldine United Methodist Church.  He was our associate pastor in the early 1990’s, and it was a treat to see him again in our church. The theme of his message was based on 2 Timothy 1:16…. 2 Tim 1:16-17 16 May the Lord show mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me...

Invite Others on the Journey (3/2/14)

This morning’s sermon was part 7 of a series of messages based on the book “The Wesleyan Way:  A Faith that Matters.”  The scripture underlying Rev. Potts’ message was Mark 8:31-38 He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. 32 He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But when Jesus turned...

Signboard: Prayer is a Real Tweet (3/1/14)

Twitter…   People tweet all kinds of short messages.  Some of it is really important stuff like, “I stepped outside and saw a leaf blow across my front lawn.”  If you follow this person, you’ll get the privilege of reading insights  like these all of the time. But what if somebody really, really important followed you?  What if that important person actually read and cared about all of your tweets? Well, guess what?  The Bible says that God “follows...

Steeple Cross Legacy (2/23/14)

This post was originally published in 2014…
The cross hanging in the Narthex was once high upon our steeple overlooking the center of town. It stood as a visible symbol of our church until the building under it was destroyed by fire in 2003. As we consider our history, we look to the past to draw inspiration for the future.

This morning’s sermon was part 6 of a series of messages based on the book “The Wesleyan Way:  A Faith that Matters.”  The scripture underlying Pastor Kee’s message was Romans 12:9-21. Some years ago the New York City Police issued an All Points Bulletin… because a car was stolen.  An  APB for one car theft??? Cars are stolen every day in New York.  But this one was special; not because of the car or owner, but because of what was left on the front seat.  The owner reported that he had ...

This morning’s sermon was part 5 of a series of messages based on the book “The Wesleyan   Way:  A Faith that Matters.”  The scripture underlying Pastor Larry’s message was Acts 2:1-21 (the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost). During this series, we’ve been exploring a journey- how do we get to a point where we truly “love the Lord our God with all our heart,  soul, mind and strength?”  It all happens through God’s grace, but we need to be...

God for All Seasons (2/13/14)

It’s the day before Valentine’s Day.  We think of special times together- a stroll through the park, a walk on the beach, times where human love and God’s presence meld together. But today is not a day to be outside.  The streets are coated with 6″ of snow.  It is sleeting.  It is cold.  Places which hold special moments in the sunshine are now places to be avoided. But yet, we’re reminded that God is still there.  In other seasons He warmed our hearts as we...

UMM Gathering with Pastor Larry (2/8/14)

We held our monthly gathering on Saturday February 8 and had a special “guest speaker”- our own Sr. Pastor, the Rev. Larry Potts! This year we’ve been looking at different Old Testament characters and trying to learn life lessons from their experiences.  Pastor Larry built on our theme by discussing the story of Daniel with us.  Actually, the book of Daniel contains six stories (and four visions).  We started with the opening chapters and discovered that Daniel was a man of...

United Methodist Men’s Gathering (1/11/14)

The United Methodist Men held our monthly “gathering” on Saturday January 11 in the Potter’s Hand room   Our gatherings start at 7:30 AM, but starting the day with friends and the Word is always a great way to “wake up”  (coffee doesn’t hurt either…”)  Our speaker was the Rev. Michael Smith, pastor of the Tabernacle United Methodist Church in Erma NJ.  Pastor Mike had to travel a bit of a distance in the early morning to meet with us, so we...

Urban Promise Visits PUMC (1/5/14)

Dr. Bruce Main, president of Urban Promise delivered the message this morning during both services. Dr. Main spoke on Colossians 3:15-7 using the Soren Kierkagaard quote, “What’s important is not the road you travel, but the way you travel the road you’re on” (or something like that…). Our surroundings may not look very good.  We may want to be on another “road”.  We may be tempted to keep saying, “One day I’ll ___”.    But our...

Season’s First Snow! (12/15/13)

Praise the Lord! Make that phrase more than just a cliche… We are constantly blessed by the beautiful Stained Glass Windows that line the upper walls of our sanctuary.  At ground level, near the staircase, we also have clear windows that let in natural lighting.  During the 11:00 service on Sunday Dec. 8, these plain clear windows reminded us of God’s majesty in a way that the Stained Glass windows never could. About half way through the service, we were treated to a view of the...

Magnificant Bulletin Cover (12/8/13)

During the Advent Season, our bulletins have been featuring artwork created by members of our congregation.  The December 8 cover depicts the passage in the Bible known as the Magnificat. Mary’s story begins as one of faith and obedience as we read Luke 1:35-38. But the reality of her situation would be disgrace, abandonment and hopelessness. (see outside border art).  Early Christian art used symbolism to convey meaning to an illustration. (See center art) As Mary arrives at Elizabeth’s...
